Browns Free Agents

The comments I've heard on the Alex Mack, Mitchell Schwartze, Travis Benjamin, and Tashaun Gipson have been surprisingly rational.  Beyond the usual wide receiver drivel, this has been a good day for Browns punditry.

Consensus says try to re-sign all of them.  Mitchell Schwartze is first, since mercenary Alex Mack will get a ridiculous offer and might well leave even if he doesn't.  Third is Travis Benjamin, and finally Gipson.  Amen and amen.

It's the reader and listener comments that provided me fodder for my next rapid-fire article.

You always have your permabashers: It won't matter because they'll just lose all their games anyway.  I just brush those off, because a guy I don't hate and isn't mentally impaired talks like that (Black Cloud).

But one guy decided Gipson sucks and Schwartze is average at best (I've got to confiscate the phrase "at best" again.  It will be returned to you when I think you won't end every third sentence with it).

This really is a load of LaCanfora.  Schwartze came along slowly, and hit some bumps, but he's become a very solid right tackle.  This is a Memorex Moron talking.  He saw those aforementioned bumps a couple seasons ago and ignored everything since.

Point to be made here: Schwartze is a mauler, and is the one offensive lineman who is better in DeFilipo's blocking scheme.

His comment on Gipson was microwaved fly feces.  Gipson is an interception machine when he's healthy.  He's just not healthy much.

Another guy said the Browns have extra cap space, so they should just pay everybody as much as they want.  If this guy ever ran a business, he ran it right into the ground.

Another guy said they should sign the Rabbit, and get rid of the other two "munchkins".  Hawkins too?  Not a good idea.  These are slot receivers who can also play outside, and you need a little depth there.  Jennings could make it, too.

The older vets, as I've mentioned, are at risk of being cut too.  People are assuming that Whitner and Dansby are secure.  They shouldn't.  The (unlikely) hire of Jim Schwartze as defensive coordinator would help both players, but they could go the way of Bowe.

Oh yes, I'm pretty sure Bowe, despite his guaranteed salary, now that logical people have taken over, is a GMF.

I got so sick of hearing "They can't cut him because of his salary" last season.  You take the hit and clear a roster spot for a more productive player, period.  What does money have to do with it?

Another guy thinks the Browns should get rid of everybody and start from scratch.  Somebody else said let Mack and Schwartze go, "get rid of" Thomas, and draft their replacements in the third or fourth rounds.

Yep.

...well I just can't top that.  Okbye
