There Goes Goff or Wentz. What Now?

Everything is different now, since the Rams will absolutely draft Goff or Wentz first overall.  So far, it sounds like they prefer Wentz, but that's all guessing.

Waittilnextyear brought up how much better the trade-down picture looks now.

I have to say this yet again: It is not necessarily true that the Browns even have a strong preference between these two quarterbacks.

Booger McFarland on NFL Radio is often wrong and says dumb stuff.  This time, he said that if the Browns have Goff rated as, for example, the eighth best player on their board, they won't draft him at number two.

Booger, he's a Q U A R T E R B A C K!

But I digress: Waittilnextyear seems to favor the trade-down.  I don't, unless Hue Jackson and company have serious doubts about Goff (or Wentz!!!) OR think Lynch or somebody else is being undervalued.

It's possible that in their opinion there IS no franchise quarterback in this draft, but I seriously doubt it.

The handiest trade-up partners now are the Iggles at eighth overall.  If the Browns target Lynch, as is very possible with Hue Jackson here, that would be very dangerous.

Still, what could the Browns get?

No, not Sam Bradford shut up with that!  A second rounder to start with.  And maybe a first rounder next year.  More likely multiple picks this season and next from second to fourth.  A nice haul, at any rate.

If the Browns aren't after Lynch, ok.  But if they want him, somebody else could jump them in line again.

Is Cook an option?  Possibly.  And his presence on the board could mitigate against the line-jumping scenario since most teams see him as pro-ready and solid (high floor).

But what's with all the Goff-bashing?  I don't know what the hell this kid did wrong, aside from not having big hands and weighing 215 lbs.

He's still got a Bernie Kosar brain and arm (remember this: When Kosar came out of college, he had a very strong arm.  He lost his deep accuracy only after an elbow injury in Kansas City).

Kosar had superb anticipation, accuracy, and decisiveness.  He could read coverage pre an post snap, and knew where he was throwing at the snap.

That is Goff.  Goff isn't a sidewinder, and has much better mobility than Kosar.  Kosar was a skinny 215.  Goff will get bigger.

So why the hate, man?  I mean, I was leaning Wentz's way myself, once I heard he has football ocd like Peyton Manning and would out work everybody else, but Jerrod Goff is no chopped liver!

I mean cut it out! The whole premise that any team MUST BE all-in with one guy and hate the other guy is nonsensical.

And in my opinion, I don't think the Browns will trade down unless they like Paxton Lynch as much...which they might.

I've finally seen some highlights of Lynch.  I know that's all the best stuff and none of the bad stuff, but it was still impressive.

Running back in high school, and described as self-taught as a quarterback.  I'm certain that his college coaches feel very insulted, and there's no way this is the whole story, but they write this stuff for a reason.

He improved on a steep curve throughout his three years.  He got humiliated in his Bowl game, which raised the big red flag that knocked him out of the top tier and into the second.

That and the nature of the offense he ran are the big strikes against him.  Minor mechanical issues are easily coached out.

I don't know enough about that putrid Bowl game, but can't automatically label him a choke artist like everybody else does reflexively.

One scout said that the opposing defense stopped his run, neutralizing his (academy award) play-fakes, and also took away his bubble screens.

They rendered him one-dimensional, and burned his playbook in front of him.  He got behind and took chances to come back.

He didn't have answers for that defense.  How much of this was on him, and how much on his limited playbook?  Was he supposed to draw plays up in the dirt?  Were his team mates simply overmatched by more talented defenders?

I hope Waittilnextyear and I can both be happy.  If Hue likes Paxton, the Browns can collect a bunch of picks and a possible franchise quarterback too.

Oh yeah: The other knock on Lynch?  He's at least a year or two away.  WHO CARES?
