In this Film Room article by Cian Fahey, the writer aggressively attacks RG3-bashers and backs it up, not only with film evidence, but with terrific logic and insight. It wouldn't surprise me if Cian hadn't been trained to think with his brain, as I was.
I will leave it to you to click the link to see the stills and films he provides, but from my cliff notes wheel house, I'll give you this (per Cian):
1: Kirk Cousins first several starts were as bad or worse (my insertion: Cousins is better suited to the West Coast). Griffin, coming off his ankle injury and into a complex new Gruden system, should have been given more time to acclimate.
2: The RED SKINS offensive line sucked. When given time, Griffin made all the reads and is NOT challenged in that area. (I am referring to Griffin operating from the pocket).
Cian wants you to know that RG3 was inconsistent in his first few games in a new offensive system not tailored to his skill set. It was NOT a train wreck, and had he been allowed to keep playing, he would have been fine. In the pocket. In the West Coast.
I like this guy, as he points to one screen shot which showed Grif tucking it in and running with four receivers open. He counters with a screen shot of Russell Wilson doing the same thing, and says this repeated error led to thirteen of Wilson's sacks.
As Cian says, this did not define Wilson's season. Every quarterback misses open receivers at times. He just wants you to know that it's ridiculous for one screen shot circulated on Twitter to wreck RG3's career.
A kind of hysteria took hold. The lynch mob, see? This guy isn't just a football geek. He understands propaganda and mob psychology. It's almost like Washington became Philadelphia for awhile!
Pat Kirwan doesn't understand these things. He says the ropes and torches will come out in Cleveland if Hue isn't winning after 1.5 seasons. Pat really took Bottlegate to heart. He has little respect for Browns fans, despite his words to the contrary.
In my experience, only about 33% of us are dumbasses incapable of comprehending what "Rebuild" means. The fact that they tend to yell an throw things makes it seem like there are more of them.
Sure, Pat, we're tired of waiting, but that doesn't make us stupid. Most of us are like Todd, the rational guy.
Pat loves talking to morons who call in with petitions to remove Haslam, calling two Harvard grads idiots, etc. He keeps them on the air as long as he can. "No, go on" "Could you elaborate?"
See? That's what's in Cleveland!
Well, according to this Film Room writer, what happened to RG3 in Washington was that sort of knee-jerk, emotional, and maybe a tad racist mass-hysteria.
I've heard contrary opinions from people I respect (if you read carefully, Cian never contradicts Trent Dilfer).
Where I stand corrected is citing RG3's inability to make multiple reads, and another film short of RG3 throwing off his back foot with no pressure.
What Cian showed me was a guy standing strong, stepping up, and taking shots to deliver strikes. He's not gun shy. He was up-and-down as he learned a new offense, only all we heard about was the cherrypicked down parts.
Hell, that cretin Murray says Manziel isn't just a punk, but he can't play! Everybody loves to pile on. Leave nothing standing! Now that RG3 is a Brown, he'll probably lack talent, too.
On the remote chance that RG3 ever reads this, I hereby apologize, and as before wish him luck with Hue Jackson.
But Hue will still tweak the offense a lot to help RG3 and the offensive line out.
