Finally, I get to read about a padded practice!
While Defensive Backs and Receivers can actually show some real stuff in shells (they're still jostling eachother and stuff), non-padded practices tell you almost nothing about offensive and defensive linemen.
Like everybody else, I'm irked that Mack Wilson laid the wood to his teammate, Nick Chubb, in a practice session, and hope he pays a stiff fine for it.
No need to beat it to death, as Wilson isn't a dirty player, and this isn't chronic. I'm sure it won't happen again, but now Chubb might have a damn concussion.
Concussions are bad. When your brain bleeds, it doesn't "scar" like your skin does. The brain heals, but the area is never again as durable as it was before the injury.
Subsequent concussions only make it weaker still.
Most boxers with "glass jaws" started out as tough as anybody else until they got that first high level concussion. After a couple more of these, the guy should just quit before he turns into Joe Biden.
Today it rained a lot, and Comrade Stefanski (to his credit) had the team practice in it.
I was always ticked off when Hue Jerkson or whoever took his snowflakes inside to keep them dry. Real football isn't played on turf and in pristine conditions.
I respect a Coach who wants to protect his players from hurting themselves slip/sliding around, but don't agree with it.
Today, the defense ate the offense's lunch, sans Myles Garrett.
Takitaki blew up a play in the backfield and fired everybody up. CB Kevin Johnson is breaking up and intercepting passes.
This guy was a first round pick who just kept getting injured. If he can stay healthy for once, he has a great chance to start opposite Denzel Ward.
The 2020 Browns are very strong and deep at Cornerback, with four starting caliber players (including Rodney Mitchellfield).
According to Randy Gurzi, Sheldrick Redwine (the "4th" Safety) has looked really good.
This shouldn't surprise anybody who paid attention in 2019, as the rookie was playing really well at SS by the end of the season, and now returns with most of a season under his belt (ready to make that big jump).
And yeah: the 2020 Browns are strong and deep at Safety, as well, with Redwine tentatively behind 3 other guys.
Grant Delpit is practicing at both Free and Strong Safety (he can line up at any secondary position).
I'm not sure exactly why, but Safety seems to be one of those positions that doesn't take a lot of time to learn, which is why smart people have this kid pencilled in as a Day 1 instastud starter.
Unit Mayfield had a shaky day in the rain today, but Gurzi says he's been kicking ass so far.
He's been completing deep passes to several different WRs, and is back to his natural "MO"; throwing to everybody, everywhere instead of John Dorsey's prize receiver.
He looks almost SKINNY compared to how he looked last season.
He remains first and formost a passer, but those who say that Mayfield is "immobile" need brain transplants.
He'll do some damage running this season. He has great instincts as a runner, and can protect himself. He should do just enough to screw short coverage guys up (tee-hee).
Randy says WR KhaDarel Hodge is also putting on a show. I love underdogs, and can't help rooting for this guy. He's caught a bunch of passes, but most notably is unexpectedly looking like a legit DEEP threat.
Hodge is a core special teamer, and should be on the final roster.
Redwine, Johnson check--Randy (and Zagura) say OBJ looks as good as he ever has.
Post-surgery, he's getting separation again.
By the way, if any of you are in contact with John Dorsey, please tell him that separation is important for 5'11" smallish receivers. He didn't seem to get that in 2019.
And Comrade Mayfield is connecting with him.
I like Mack Wilson's attitude in response to the Browns' Linebackers being ranked 31st in the NFL. He feels insulted, and says he's making sure his fellow Linebackers know what people are saying about them.
Objectively, Mack Wilson sucked for most of his rookie season, but, like Redwine (except much later), looked better in his last couple games, and is primed for his own big sophomore leap.
5th round pick or no, Mack Wilson has the talent to be an elite NFL Linebacker. He does everything well, and it truly is ignorant to write any such player off based on his rookie season.
Wilson only started 17 games in college. He was not intended to start in 2019. A little common sense here?
Sione Takitaki was converted from Defensive End to Linebacker, and was panned by most analysts for "slow processing", questionable instincts, and missed tackles.
But even checking out this report by a Steelers writer, the guy seems not to notice that Takitaki's best carreer performances came at the very end, and he did well at the EW Shrine game and the Senior Bowl.
The guy writes this part, and goes right back to "but his tape is riddled with"--as if his earlier games as a converted DE carry as much or more weight as the later games, played after he had some experience at his new position.
That's bad analysis. In 2019, PFF graded him out at 64+ overall (slightly above average) in limited reps.
Bullcrap aside, he's a well-rounded, versatile linebacker like Wilson, except better coming downhill and weaker in coverage.
Jacob Phillips started for the National Champions and led his conference in tackles. He posted outstanding combine numbers and is 6'3" tall and I can't fathom...
How can you rank this crew 31st? I mean, with 2 of them entering their second NFL seasons and another one an athletic freak rookie National Champion?
On this planet, anybody with a modicum of imagination and common sense would guesstimate the 2020 Browns' Linebackers as somewhere around the middle of the pack.
I kinda ignored ex-Bungle BJ Goodson, who is very good vs the run and insists he can do more, by the way. Sorry BJ.
Anyway the 5th DB in the base defense will cover first and stop the run last, and the reverse is true for the Linebackers, only 2 of which will be on the field...
They'll shoot gaps and run-and-hit, and the 3 youngsters I mentioned do that is any of this...
Pearls before swines nevermind okbye
