It's starting to look like Jack Conklin could be this year's Mitchell Schwartze! I had all but given up on the Browns prying him loose from the Titans, but it's sounding like Conklin is the Titans' Joe Schobert.
COUNT ON Drew Berry being all over this guy, in the thick of the bidding. I was pretty sure that the rumors of his signing with the Jets were BS when I heard them, because he's THE top OT in free agency, and he would have been foolish to take the first offer he got.
The bidding war for Conklin should be diluted somewhat by the strength of the 2020 OT draft class.
The Browns are somewhat unique, in that they need TWO Offensive Tackles. Some teams don't need any, and others only need one.
Smart GMs never pay big money to a veteran if they can draft a player for a fraction of his salary, and for four years.
You guys know (because I told you) that DePoBerry will soon increase their available cap money to over 80 million bucks.
Spottrack pegs Conklin's market value at around 15.25 mil/year. DePoBerry could sign him for 4 years at 16 mil/year and still have 65 mil left for 2020.
First year guaranteed. Second year 80% guaranteed. Third year 60%. By the 4th year of the contract, the salary cap is probably 25+% higher, and Conklin is CHEAP, see?
In years 3 and 4, in fact, a healthy Conklin is tradeable. This is how smart GMs do it.
Isaiah Simmons blew up the Combine tests, so the Browns have little hope of that freak being there at 10 (dammit). This makes re-signing Joe Schobert more important...or...
One of these guys.
In the linked article, Sione Takitaki is listed as a candidate to take over MLB. He could. But he can't cover like the other 2 guys (one free agent and one mid-round draft pick).
Mack Wilson can cover; Woods could work with Takitaki and Wilson, especially if he's able to land a good coverage SS or LB/SS hybrid.
With all due respect to MKC, trading up 2 or 3 spots for Simmons is feasable, but that's all. They could use one of their third round picks. Moving any higher gets too expensive for a team with this many holes to fill.
DL Derrick Brown had a mediocre combine, and should now be available at 10.
His numbers say he's a nose tackle or run-stuffer period. It is much less likely that DePoBerry will take him at 10th overall now.
In my last post, I hypothesized that the Cowpokes might trade 17th overall for OBJ, but this Eagles writer thinks Howie Roseman might move up to snag one of the top 3 WRs in this draft class.
The Iggles draft 21st overall, and the writer cites the value chart at either their 2021 first round pick or their 2020 2nd and 3rd round picks.
But this writer is unaware that OBJ is on the block, and could be had for 21st overall and maybe a 2021 3rd rounder, period.
Are any of these guys going to be as good as OBJ in 2020? No. Are any of them ever going to be as good as OBJ? Who knows?
Roseman might well find it cheaper overall to simply use 21 overall to secure a plug-and-play superstar WR.
The Iggles have almost 42 mil in cap space right now. OBJ would knock that down to 27 mil, but---like their rivals the Cowboys---this is a "win now" team, and players like OBJ are stalemate-breakers, you see?
Indeed, the Cowboys have over 73 mil in cap space right now, so there could be a fight over OBJ, who has torn both teams a new one twice a year for several years now.
Ok so in my updated halfassed mock draft I now have the Browns obstensibly drafting 10th and 17th or 21st overall, and very likely to trade down from 10th overall.
...well ok if Simmons makes it past 4th overall he could come into trade-up range for the Browns--so stipulated. But 17 or 21 is reserved for a Left Tackle (or another trade-down and a Left Tackle tee-hee).
Ok see, do I need to re-explain why a Joe Thomas is not required in 2020 with Stefanski's system for the 129th time?
SEE PAST POSTS.
If you're confused here, welcome to the club:
I'm just sorting through a sload of possibilities here my own self (and doing a better job of it than everybody else blush-blush), so my readers have stuff to think about themselves.
That's my job here, see? Even smart people like that Philly writer miss stuff that I don't.
Anyhoo, hoping to nail down Superman Simmons is optimistic, but piling up a bunch of 2020 and 2021 draft picks and a stud Left Tackle is not.
Paul DePodesta is really an efficiency expert, and will help Andrew Berry max this offseason out.
You people should remember the trade-down away from Carson Wentz, then another trade-down...and then drafting Corey Coleman in the first round.
Ogbah, Nassib, Schobert, Higgins, Ricardo Lewis, Seth DeValve, Shon Coleman, Shaun Payton et al were all drafted here. I believe that ALL of them are still playing in the NFL to this day.
Nassib, DeValve, and maybe Ogbah should probably not been cut, but John Dorsey purged them (remember? "Not real football players"?)
There's your "foodball guy" vs your "moneyball" guy, ok?
Is any of this sinking in yet?
Dorsey probably could have locked Schobert up long-term for under 9 mil/year ahead of the 2019 season, but he didn't draft him.
He could have locked Rashard Higgins up long-term for CHUMP CHANGE, but he didn't draft him.
He cut Nassib and Ogbah because he didn't draft them (compare Dorsey's "real football players" to Nassib/Ogbah).
The "analytics" guys will generally win over the egotistical guys, because they are objective, and don't care who gets credit for what.
This is important, you people: If you are objective, (ie don't let your EGO get in the way of your analysis), you will win more often than not.
Sorry for the redundancy, but Geddleman HOSED John Dorsey when he traded Vernon and OBJ for (ahem) 17th overall, Jabrill Peppers, Zeitler, and a 3rd round pick for 2 constantly injured players, one of which was almost 30, and with a 31 mil cap hit!?!
Seems to me that Geddleman was a tad more analytical than Dorsey here!
Bash Jimmy Haslam all you want, but he's trying hard to fix this:
He (not DePodesta) "missed" on Hue Jackson (and then didn't fire him after 1-31).
Paul DePodesta wanted current Bills Head Coach Shawn McDermott or (I forget but another successful candidate) over Hue Jackson, but Haslam overrode him.
DePodesta has proven himself to Haslam, as his Head Coach picks have kicked ass.
This is why what really happened here was Haslam ceding power to DePodesta, who is always right (except about Carson Wentz).
What if it had been McDermott instead of Jackson? What if John Dorsey hadn't come in here and cut those players, made those trades, and squandered that money?
If you're bashing DePodesta's promotion, or Stefanski's hiring, you are an idiot (no offense).
Thank God the Vernon and OBJ contracts are escapable!
...okbye
