Jarvis Landry where are you? I guess he got his boy OBJ to do the lobbying for him this time.
The Tampa Beat reporter who was interviewed on NFL Radio said that the 31-year old no doubt plans to play 3-4 more years and ought to get offered maybe ten mil/year.
Wow these guys sure throw a lot of other people's money around!
This writer predicted that naturally McCoy would start next to either Ogunjobi or Richardson (yawn) because those guys are just mediocre (yawn) or something, and it's irrelevant that they play different positions.
McCoy is 31 years old. Sheldon Richardson is 28 and similar to McCoy. You take reps off older players in order to preserve them, and the Browns (or Patriots) won't be looking for Gerald to play a lot of snaps.
And Gerald can want or plan to play as long as he wants, but he is a Defensive TACKLE, and Father Time is undefeated.
Ten mil/year? Well somebody might pay McCoy that much, but probably not the Browns.
Well...I suppose they could try to front-load his contract...pay him 10 mil in 2019, but then much less in 2020 and beyond; 2020 is when they'll need more cap space.
McCoy obviously wants to play for a winner, and might take a little less money to get on one of those teams. In that respect, Cleveland works.
I'd like to see Gerald McCoy as part of that DT rotation, but it mainly depends on how dumb the other teams are. Somebody is likely to overpay him, and it won't be
Back to what I might offer: 8.5 mil in 2019 (fully guaranteed), 7 mil in 2020 (4 mil guaranteed), 6 mil in 2021 (1.5 mil guaranteed).
I might go a little higher for 2019.
This contract gives McCoy 2 seasons with the Browns to win all the marbles, and makes him affordable to keep around as he turns 34 (so if he's still productive they probably don't release him, and he gets another crack at a Superbowl).
Of course, that's a reasonable contract, so we can expect McCoy's agent to storm out the instant he hears it (sigh).
Myles Garrett wouldn't comment on the prospect of bringing Gerald McCoy to the Browns. Myles is a smart guy, and doesn't want to insult Sheldon Richardson (who is pretty good...ya no?)
Garrett said you haven't seen the best of Larry Ogunjobi yet, and is himself looking forward to using more than the two passrush moves that Gregg Williams inexplicably limited him to.
I think he'll go bonkers this season, as he got 13.5 sacks with only two moves; that's his floor. The combination of an increased arsenal, Richardson, and Vernon should have Myles Garrett breaking some records in 2019.
It goes beyond that, too: Improved pass coverage, and game-scripts should also feed the Passrush monster:
This Browns offense should be in the lead more often in 2019 than any year since the Franchise was renewed with Tim Couch.
This Browns offense can score points on ANY defense, and hold it's own in any shootout (Chargers? Rams? Steelers? Saints? Bring it!)
In some games, the Browns will be 10-plus points up at halftime. More often, they'll be up by that margin entering the 4th quarter, and it won't be vs the juggernauts I mentioned in the previous paragraph.
Probably at least four times in 2019, they'll blow somebody out.
I'm not sure how Numberfire or PFF or DePodesta breaks it down, but the simplest way for me to express this here/now is:
"Percentage of Plays in Which Handoffs are Futile and Amount to Surrender Because a Team is Getting Blown Out and Must Pass and Stuff" (PPIWHAFTIGBOAMPAS@).
Anyway, in 2018, this might have been 5 or 7.5% for the Browns' Defense. In 2019, it should mushroom up to over 20-25%.
It's not just the Offense, but also the upgraded Defense, which should be stingier vs the run and in general early in games, see?
-snap-snap- still with me here? Sorry: Anyway it's obvious: Myles and everybody else should get to pin their ears back and go on unregulated Quarterback hunts 3-plus times as often in 2019 as in 2018.
Steve Wilks finds himself in a much more comfortable situation than Gregg Williams (or any other Browns DC) ever had, as the Defense he now has is STACKED, and so is the Offense!!!
Much like John Dorsey, Wilks lucked out here. He was in the right place at the right time. Suddenly he finds himself with (ahem) Myles Garrett, Sheldon Richardson, Larry Ogunjobi, Olivier Vernon, Joe Schobert, Denzel Ward, Terrence Mitchell, Greedy Williams, Damarius Randall...for starters!?!
Wilks' sample-size as a DC and Head Coach was all of two seasons, so I was never part of that cult, but a lot of smart people are Wilks fans, so I must expect him to be at least competent.
...It helps that he appears to be allowing Myles Garrett to use more than two passrush moves (dammit Gregg Williams what tf was UP with that are you outta your ohhmmm....ohhmmm....)
Anyway I expect Steve Wilks to be at least competent as the Browns' DC, and to somehow manage not to screw up the massive talent he has to work with.
Ditto Freddie Kitchens. I find it funny that some people keep pointing out that he was only an Offensive Coordinator for half a season.
Actually, Freddie Kitchens is a freaking genius, and should have been a Head Coach awhile ago.
My regular readers won't find anything new in the linked article. DUH he's up to his eyeballs in excellent assistant Coaches, including Monken and Wilks.
He's happy to lean on those guys, and let them do their jobs (*Freddie Kitchens is NOT an egomaniac or a control-freak, believe it or not*).
Freddie says he won't change. Good. No wonder Freddie and Baker get along so well!
Obviously, Freddie has no problem with the PR part of being a Head Coach, despite the fact that for several minutes per-week, it prevents him from micromanaging his assistant Coaches and opens windows for mutinee...
You people don't get it yet. It's going to be FUN to play for the Cleveland Browns, and that includes crunch-time.
Remember Baker Mayfield's Micheal Jackson "hee-hee!" as he walked back into his facility, and every other player echoing it with a huge grin?
Mayfield is obviously a born leader, but some of you don't get that so is Freddie Kitchens, in a different way.
It's a marriage made in Heaven.
The 2019 Browns ARE legit Superbowl contenders. Freddie Kitchens is being underrated...as usual.
...Okbye
