Randy Gurzi says that new OC Todd Monken wants the 2019 Browns to run more RPOs. Eggzellent.
As I have pointed out, the Browns quarterback, running backs, and offensive line are ideal for the Run/Pass Option.
Offensive linemen (and blocking tight ends) love RPO's, because they get to fire out and run-block, regardless of what the Quarterback decides to do. That's the best part of it.
Naturally, Defensive Coordinators are working on countermeasures, and RPO's are getting tougher to execute.
Not every team can do it consistently. You need a quarterback who can make the right decision, and sometimes throw off-platform.
You need a running back who is a legitimate threat to do major damage (ie that the defense must fear as a ball-carrier).
You need athletic, smart blockers.
Randy said that Baker Mayfield ran some RPO stuff at Oklahoma already, and is already a proven commodity.
Add to that that Baker also ran Monken's vertical spread, and this whole thing is looking real good!
New DC Steve Wilks tells us why he wanted to come to the Cleveland Browns, and signed on so quickly. He mentioned Garrett, Mayfield, and Ward, among other things.
(Note to "allaboardtherosentrain": Wilks also said "no brainer"...HINT. HINT.)
Todd Monken echoed some of what Wilks said, and also got into trading verbal punches with Mayfield, and working out an offensive scheme with Freddie Kitchens.
I "read" more in this sterile conference than the pundits or you people will:
Monken made a point of saying that for the first three quarters of Tampa Bay's games, his offense ran almost as much as it passed.
What he didn't mention was that he didn't have Nick Chubb, Duke Johnson, or a defense.
In Cleveland, he has better running backs, and a better offensive line. Todd won't admit it (and throw Jameious Winston under the bus), but he has a better young quarterback here, too.
He also didn't have a stud tight end, or a bunch of tight ends.
Monken can do a lot more with the 2019 Browns' offense than he could with Tampa's 2018 offense.
This should terrify the rest of the NFL, since the Bucs had one of the scariest offenses in the NFL last season, with Fitz and Winston.
Provided John Dorsey ignores YOU people, and doesn't squander high draft picks or money on offensive players (and does retain most of the current ones), Kitchens/Monken(/Mayfield) can create an offensive juggernaut in 2019.
If, as I assume, Dorsey focuses on front seven defensive players in the draft and free agency, Steve Wilks could show up with a top ten (or top five) defense to go with that.
If this sounds overly optimistic to you, YOU are not being objective.
Baker Mayfield doesn't need a "tutor", or a "go-to" wide receiver, or a Joe Thomas. Nobody is going to outsmart Monken, Wilks, or Kitchens, and talent is talent TALENT IS TALENT.
I give up. The 2019 Browns will win the AFC North 🖕I HAVE SPOKEN.
