Freddie Kitchens the Leader. Confidence. Browns' Pundit Dumbassitude

Nick Chubb is working on becoming even more of a beast.

Some fans don't get that Chubb is as good as or better than Kareem Hunt as a pure runner--that's part of their Stockholm Syndrome.

Hunt was an instant dual-threat with KC, but by the end of his own rookie season, Chubb had proven to be an aerial threat himself.

Whenever Hunt comes back off his suspension, don't expect him to elbow this stud out of his way.

Peter Smith offers up four EDGE guys (three Defensive Ends) in this draft class who he thinks may be underrated.

Pete seems to have focused on real football players who are effective vs the run...guys who aren't flashy, but are good.

Most of these guys should be available in the second round or later.

I hesitated to include this Doug Lesmerisis article, because it felt too "fluffy", but there are useful Freddie Kitchens quotes in it, and it made me think:

Confidence (yawn).  Freddie is looking for confident players.  He tries to give players confidence zzzzz....zzzzz what?  Oh...yeah:

But Doug himself said something about Kitchens not talking about finding good "system fits", and Kitchens talked about not undermining his players' confidence, and this made me think:

Why did everybody stop dropping passes the very day Freddie took over the offense?  A more Mayfield-freindly scheme obviously helped this and the offensive line, but only five sacks?

Freddie Kitchens might be special as a leader and motivator:

I've written before about the instant improvement of the whole offense the very instant Freddie took it over.

It wasn't all about the common freaking sense adapting the scheme to the available talent.

There were fewer penalties, pressures, drops--and some highlight-reel big plays.

I seriously think there's more to Freddie Kitchens than just common sense and brains.  He makes his players.....confident.

Or something...

Kitchens says he doesn't need a big name wide receiver (duh).  He got kinda off-track and abstract after that (possibly on purpose, for counter-intelligence purposes), but you who read this know what he meant, because I've been telling you since game 15 in 2018.

The aforementioned article mentioned that the Browns are trying to re-sign Brashad Perriman.

Martin McConnell stresses the retention of Rashard Higgins instead.

I don't disagree with Martin by any means, but he hits the "chemistry" with Baker Mayfield too hard.

Baker Mayfield isn't Sam Darnold, or Josh Allen.  He's already established chemistry with Callaway, Perriman, Duke etc as well.

Sigh...sigh listen carefully: Baker Mayfield is like Bernie Kosar mentally.  He sees the whole field.  He checks down from one to four in about two seconds after the snap and goes back to the top of his list again.

You keep labeling Mayfield "inexperienced", but he doesn't fit in that box.

Rashard Higgins is an underrated playmaker and a very reliable receiver, but to Mayfield, he's just that.  Baker Mayfield needs no crutches DO YOU UNDERSTAND?

Freddie Kitchens, per Andrew Gribble, talked about "plans for" Brashad Perriman.

Perriman was a first round draft pick due to his freaky size/speed combination; he definitely projected as a number one X-receiver.

Higgins has a higher floor than Perriman, but not nearly as high a cieling.

I have to go back to that hard-to-pin down "Kitchens confidence" (and probably Mayfield) effect:

Brashad had ZERO drops, and made several big plays for the Browns.  Like fellow "bust" first round pick Greg Robinson, he shined in Cleveland with Kitchens and Mayfield.

Nick Snook overviewed the top 100 Free agents, looking for those who he thinks could help the Browns.

(First, I must correct myself: Ndamukan Suh is 32 (not 30). Forget everything I said about him).

Cornerback Pierre Desir (drafted by the Browns) is interesting to me (and to Steve Wilks). Desir is big, tall, and excels in off-man and zone.

Nick didn't get the memos from Kitchens, Mayfield, Perriman, Callaway, or me, so he tried to fill the gaping hole at wide receiver.

He found a bunch of guys who aren't good enough to make the current roster, but accidentlly named Chargers WR Terrell Williams.

...Williams is 6'4" and a true X.  But Dorsey won't overpay for a player HE DOESN'T N E E D, so I doubt he will sign this guy.

Nick named a bunch of cornerbacks other than Desir, but most of them...well Nick has Stockholm Syndrome worse than most of us:

In Terrence Mitchell and Denzel Ward, the Browns have two excellent man corners, and TJ Carrie is no slouch (better in off-man and zone).  Rodney Boddy-Calhounfield had one bad year, so apparently he's a bumb now?

I won't inflict the link on you, but some guy with a good resume tried to figure out John Dorsey's priorities in the 2019 Draft.

He asked hypothetical questions like "does he take the 7th-best passrusher over the 2nd best offensive tackle?"

Actually, this article wasn't that bad overall, but this whole offensive tackle obsession flunked it.

Nobody (including Daniel Jeremiah) gets this!

Before I even get to the Cleveland Browns, the left tackle position has become less critical in general.

Rules changes and adaptations from college defenses have favored West Coast and spread offenses.  Two-tight end offenses are becoming almost common, and defenses are looking for Arnold (or Sapp) type defensive TACKLES to counter them.

Quarterbacks like Brees, Rodgers, Mayfield, Wilson, Watson, Mahomes etc are moving in as the Mannings, Big Ben, Flacco etc fade out.

Get rid of the ball quick.  Nail the spot.  Move a little.  It's obvious.

Zing!  Right over their heads!

That's even before I get to this specific (Browns) team:

Skipping Monken for now, Freddie Kitchens' 2018 offense used two tight ends and 2-3 running backs partly to chip edge-rushers, and partly to give Mayfield easy and early targets (along with overpowering run-blocking).

In general, the only time you saw Baker Mayfield hold the ball more than around 3.2 seconds, he was moving.  Err...like you know, away from that blind side edge-rusher (knock-knock?), OR right up behind his guards and center while those fiercom edge-rushers got ridden in big arcs behind him...

Ah crap you don't need to be Jake Burns for this.  Just re-run a couple Browns games, and you'll see it.

You people need to maybe look at the Patriots and Colts with their big tall quarterbacks:

Who is their Julio Jones?  When do they stand there for five or six seconds waiting for their receivers to get open 40-plus yards downfield?

The Browns need another Joe Thomas (and by the way, good luck with that)? In 2019?

You people...

John Dorsey Doesn't Want to Replace Good Players With Worse Players. D U H.

The instant I heard that the Bengals had John Ross on the trading block, I knew that as soon as I checked on line, somebody would be pushing for Dorsey to go get him.

There's one in every crowd.

I have to admit that I am mildly interested, since Andy Dalton is no Baker Mayfield, Ross has two years (plus a fifth year option) on his rookie deal, and it's early to throw in the towel on this guy.

Still, his catch-rate is deplorable, and the Browns have lots of receivers (I mean here on this planet).

To that end, let me describe to you how the Kitchens/Monken offense might shake out with guys currently on the roster.

Call it the UFO Offense:

Personnel Group A: DeValve, Njoku, Callaway, Landry, and Duke.

That's "12 personnel"; a nominal run-set, except Defenses seeing Duke might keep a nickel in.  If it's Chubb instead, they go base.

Anyway, when the huddle breaks, this can turn into anything Kitchens wants, and if Mayfield sees a weakness in how the defense lines up, he can move somebody.

This could be a conventional two-tight end one-back run-set, Set DeValve back at fullback or H-back as a two-back, three-wide, four-wide, or empty backfield five-wide (*Chubb can play in the slot--watch and learn*).

Former wide receiver Seth DeValve and Njoku can each line up outside...err...by the way they're big and tall, ya no.  Hard to miss?

Callaway and Njoku had some drops early in 2018, but by the last several games became quite reliable, and (cross your fingers) this really should continue.

Callaway is a complete receiver, as well as a back-shoulder type burner.  He can run every pattern.  He can catch bombs, or turn short passes into home runs.

Duke is Duke, but you haven't seen the best of Nick Chubb yet; He can do everything Todd Gurley does.  Stand by!

If you people could please get your heads out of your labels and boxes, you would be able to comprehend why this offense doesn't need a big/tall X receiver, or a Joe Thomas Left Tackle.

This hypothetical personnel group was a "base" grouping.  Variants would include one of the freaking FOUR 6'2"-plus wide receivers on the current roster, or Darrin Fells instead of DeValve, but in every case it could deploy as anything from a smashmouth run offense to a max-protect deep-passing offense to Monken's vertical four-wide.

The UFO Offense.  You heard it here first-all rights preserved.

The Combine is about to start.  Like DePodesta, Dorsey pays attention.  Denzel Ward, Tyreek Hill, Antonio Callaway, and Kareem Hunt are four examples.

Guys who say that watching college films is everything and combine numbers don't matter are either dumbasses or liars:

The combine numbers confirm or deny that a small school prospect has the tools to play in the NFL.  They help the Scouts identify positions and scheme-fits, and break ties between equally-ranked players.

By the way, at the Senior Bowl, Montez Sweat (DE or EDGE) tested out as more explosive than the other defensive ends, linebackers, and the majority of defensive backs.

Just sayin.  (If you're going to "pay attention" to somebody, you might as well pay attention to somebody who your team actually needs, right?)

Odell Beckham Jr, Antonio Callaway, Memorex Morons, and Offensive Tackles

Nick Dudukovich wrote a good article on why it would be stupid to trade for Odell Beckham Jr.

Nick covered the behavioral issues and money part pretty well, but not the draft pick(s) he would cost in trade.

Pat Kirwan thinks he could fetch anything below a top ten draft pick, but that the Giants might find a cooler market for him than they want (and might keep him rather than "sell" at a discount).

Should Dorsey lose his damn mind, 17th overall should do it, but he won't.  Beckham isn't a true X receiver.  He's more like his pal Landry (and Duke Johnson, for that matter).

Antonio Callaway. is a bit taller, but is a similar player.

Callaway's rookie season showed tremendous promise to those of us not living in Oblivia or Myopia, and the guy who drafted him isn't nearly as interested in replacing him as a lot of you people are.

It would be rediculous to deny Beckham's game-breaking talent (and reliability).  He's one of the best in the business, and might not even have peaked yet.

But as Nick noted, he's missed time with injuries every season, and he's not a big guy, either.

Rather than a great-but-oft-injured redundant wide receiver, Dorsey will probably focus in top-tier defensive players in Free Agency, because (sigh) he doesn't need yet another wide receiver.

Or clownish flakes in general (no offense, Odell.  It's not hate ok?)

MKC answered some smart and dumb questions.  The first was about Callaway becoming a number one receiver someday.

Mary Kay is right in her answer:  Yes.  Callaway can actually play the X-position.  He's only 6' tall, but that's taller than Antonio Brown and Beckham.  He can separate and burn vertically (as well as short).

As I've redundated redundantly, Callaway had little experience in college, and thought a route tree was something you found in an orchard.

He sucked at first, but progressed steadily throughout the season (especially after Mayfield took over.  Big surprise right?)

This was a raw wide receiver learning on the job, with no opportunity to decompress or "internalize" what he had learned.

When he returns in 2019, he'll be running (correct) routes without thinking; he'll be significantly better than he was even late in 2018.

...just in time to get parked behind Beckham, right? Memorex Morons never get this stuff.

Dorsey signed Greg Robinson for one more season.  The short term is partly due to Rodney Harrisonfield, who will be getting a fair chance at starting at left tackle.

Oh sorry MM's: Desmond Harrison is an actual athlete like Joe Thomas, but was extremely raw, and kind of light, so he got his ass beat up as a rookie starter at left tackle.

I know you slammed that book closed and threw it in the trash as soon as Robinson took over for him, but all you read was the freaking PROLOGUE.  I retrieved the book, and bookmarked Chapter I for you, and included a Dictionary (there will be some big words in there).

Robinson is Insurance, or perhaps a placeholder for Harrison.  Robinson could also "ball out" and finally live up to his draft status; Dorsey has it covered.

Mitch Zoloty thinks the Browns should check out AAF linebacker Kevin Garvin for depth and Special Teams, and has sold me on it.

Mitch doesn't agree with a lot of us that Jamie Collins and his 10 mil salary should hit the road.  I'm a big Zoloty fan so far, so I need to consider this:

Collins might not have been fully recovered from his injury in 2018.  On the other hand, he missed a ton of tackles, and my Film Room guys spotted bad decisions and a lack of discipline.

...I still think I'd rather get that ten mil back into the cap.  They can't count on Jamie Collins to be where he is supposed to be, there are quality linebackers in free agency, and upgrading the defensive line is a bigger priority.

Daniel Jeremiah considers Defensive Tackle Jeffery Simmons as possibly one of the three best players in this draft, and says that "if, for some reason" he is still there at 17th overall, Dorsey should grab him.

Wow! Even with a torn ACL, Daniel would be surprised if this guy even makes it to 17!!!

Jeremiah is the real deal (he's taken over for Mike Mayock now).

Dorsey is in "win now" mode, but Dan says he "can't pass" Simmons up if he's still there.

Well, if John Dorsey agrees (or even if he doesn't), he'll be going after veteran defensive tackles (and ends) anyway heading into the draft.

He should certainly upgrade these positions (to some extent) that way.  If he agrees with Daniel, and Simmons is there, he can grab him, and wait for one season.

If Simmons is not there, he can go best available.

Daniel also (sigh) thinks that Left Tackle Dillard would be a great pick for the Browns at 17.

He is wrong.  He is probably right about how good Dillard (or Taylor) could be, but is wrong about offensive tackle being a priority anywhere near Defensive line, linebacker, or even cornerback or wide receiver for John Dorsey in 2019.

Dorsey might draft an offensive tackle if Simmons, Wilkins, Sweat, Oliver, White, Greedy Williams, and Metcalf are all gone.

Daniel also likes DE's Sweat and Farrell a lot.  Sweat is probably a GMF by then, but Farrell should be there.

Dorsey should consider Haskins if he lasts long enough.  Nice raw developmental Quarterback.  An investment.

Why John Dorsey is Father Flannagan, and You People Are Sissies

I get the whole "freedom of speech" thing enshrined in the Bill of Rights, but I doubt that our founding fathers forsaw the deliberate and systematic transformation of our educational system into a Federally-standardized Department of Brainwashing.

While they obviously anticipated scarier firearms (duh), they probably never saw Twitter coming.

There is no way that these guys could imagine the combination of every low-grade moron having a public voice, and the general population being deliberately stupified.

Karl Marx, Engels, Mao etc came later, but the Founders saw all that crap coming, and built safeguards into the Constitution to prevent it.

Didn't matter.  In clear and obvious violation of the US Constitution, the Federal Department of Education was established. And Federal Welfare.

You people have been deliberately stupifed, and taught NOT to think.  Even now, you're "liking" yourselves into sheephood "baah! Baah!"

Political Correctness is a tool to stifle free and independant thought (let alone speech).

Colon Kaperdick is a clueless idiot (and not a very good quarterback either.)  Antonio Brown is a classic Diva, 30 years old, and an asshole.  Ebineezer Bell is unreasonable.

Nobody wants to admit any of this stuff, but a player is excluded from the combine for once grabbing a woman by the arm, and texting and calling her a hundred or so times.

All you thenthitive people are pretty clueless:

Kareem Hunt was raised by the Family in "Animal Kingdom".  He might have been the ONLY one of them not to serve time.

His cousin is proud of him!  Not because he succeeded in the NFL, but because "he fights.  That's what Hunts do.  We fight"

"Knocked down and kicked a woman" oh stop it!  Hunt was certainly an asshole and an idiot, but if you sissies had ever had a fight in your lives, or dealt with hillbillies or gansters, or had a freaking CLUE about how these kids are brainwashed, you would not find that videotape all that bad.

He could have KILLED that woman.  He could have killed the guy trying to defend her (good for him by the way!), and kicked the crap out of at least a couple of the other people ganging up on him.

Yeah yeah he was an asshole, but you people (including Brady Quinn) need to get in more fights and live among more subhuman animals before you sentence Kareem Hunt to eternal damnation.

I'm not saying he wasn't an asshole.  Only that he was raised to be an asshole, and that anybody with a couple scars and a bent nose is laughing at the rest of you for seeing that tape as the freaking Holocaust or something!

But I digress...

Browns Pundit Corrections: Reality Check. Dumbassitude Creep

"Report: Cleveland Browns have no chance of landing Antonio Brown."  Oh, the humanity -sob-.

Blind squirrel Jeff Risdon missed badly on three of four restricted free agents the Browns should look at, but Ravens linebacker Patrick Onwuasor is definitely a hit.

...well that is unless they can steal C J Mosely out from under them instead.

Patrick would play on the weak side here.  He's actually a sort of strong safety/linebacker hybrid with speed and range; a "run-and-hit" guy that you really don't want taking on offensive linemen.

"Restricted" only means that if the Ravens choose to match the offer of another team, they keep Onwuasor.

He's a starter in a Wilkins defense, so it's likely that John Dorsey will take a stab at this guy.  He might offer slightly more than he would otherwise, to make it harder for his Division rival to hold onto him.

Patrick Onwuasor should be "affordable".

My man Jake Burns identified four guys the Browns should pay special attention to at the upcoming combine, and said a few more things to Les Levine on Levine's show.

Jake is predictably on the money, but unpredictably not perfect this time, as he differs slightly with my humble self:

Jake sees "one more" offensive playmaker as at least as important as defensive tackle and linebacker, and mentions "edge" instead of "defensive end".

No knock on Jake here!  Nobody's perfect!

The first guy Jake lists is WR D K Metcalf (nephew of Eric).  I have to respect Jake Burns here, as he doesn't say stuff like this without having checked these guys out on tape.

While Jake is wrong that the offense needs playmakers as much as the defense does, this Metcalf guy is a mutant.

Metcalf is, indeed, a lot like Josh Gordon physically, except bigger.

I've been harping on how really accurate quarterbacks like Baker Mayfield don't need these skyscrapers (with moon-sized catch radii), but Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees would tell you that they come in handy.

Micheal Thomas is one of these guys.  He's not as big or as fast as D K Metcalf, but look at what Drew Brees has done with him!

And yes, Brees had a lot to do with Micheal's domination.  Thomas beat double-coverage as much because of Brees's placement and touch as because of his physical ability.

And remember Kamara, Ginn, and those other guys?

Anyway, D K Metcalf needs some "polishing", but would make an immediate and significant impact as of game one.

It's hard for me to agree, even conditionally, with a bunch of idiots that a guy like Metcalf would help, but I have to.

I'm not sure about Monken, but I know that Freddie Kitchens is adaptable.  I also know that Metcalf should have the "quicks" to fit into Monken's 4-vertical attack scheme.

This guy is a legit 6'4" and 230+ lbs:  With an outside guy like that, you can attack soft man or zone coverage:

A freak like this doesn't neccessarily have to break off underneath.  He can charge right into the teeth of those deep guys, because it doesn't matter how many defenders are around him if the pass is accurate.

Ask Micheal Thomas.  Ask Drew Brees.

So Jake might be right here (if Metcalf is indeed all that).  In combination with Landry, Chubb, Callaway and Duke, this one player could turn the 2019 Browns offense into a "Greatest Show on Turf"-like juggernaut.

Then Jake Burns lists DTs Ed Oliver and Christian Wilkins, and linebacker Devin White, therebye proving himself almost as smart as my humble self.

Oliver and White are both currently expected to be long gone before the Browns draft at 17th overall, but Oliver might slide due to his size and limited role, and White could, simply because he's a linebacker.

Wilkins might still be there.

I always like checking Jake Burns out.  I'm running out of people who can teach me anything, and analysts who COMPREHEND FOOTBALL are in short supply as well.

Randy Gurzi is sliding fast.  He again mocks LB Devin Bush at 17th overall.  As always, Randy makes a solid case: Bush is short, but can cover.  Those numbers don't lie.

But he's not White, linebacker isn't that much of a priority, and Wilkins (or another top DT) should still be there.

In the second round, Randy nabs maimed DT Jeffery Simmons.  Amen to that!  You can't count on his injury and off the field stuff forcing him down that far, but if he's still there, Dorsey will nab him.

  • But then Randy drafts a wide receiver in the third round...Jacobi Meyers, who shined as a SLOT receiver!  But wait a minute: He's 6'2"! Like Willies, Perriman, Higgins, Louis, Ratley, and Strong...

Randy is extremely wrong here.

Then he drafts an offensive tackle at the bottom of the third round.

This player is NOT better than Austin Corbett, and Randy himelf stipulates that he probably can't start in 2019.

The 2019 Browns don't need...nevermind I give up.

In the 4th, Randy drafts another (potential sleeper) DT and a tall cornerback, which works for me.  But he calls cornerback a "significant need" in 2019...

Well I respect the hell out of Randy Gurzi, but right now I want to slap him awake, because he sounds clueless.

I'll get back to that later:

Nah skip his edge-rusher and tight end in the 5th and the rest of it I gotta correct Randy right now:

1: Joe Thomas, Shaun O'Hara, and a bunch of other real experts have been contradicting those pundits who proclaim offensive tackle (or offensive line) a "need" for the Browns.

1a: Austin Corbett is NOT a bust.

2: Thanks to Jake Burns, I know Steve Wilks's probable coverage scheme:

Wilks should max out press/man corners like Denzel Ward and Rodney Mitchellfield, but he has historically run off-man and zone coverages (like the Seahawks).

This will be a big help for T J Carey, not to mention Rodney Boddy-Calhounfield.  And Randall, Kindred, and Peppers too...and Schobert.

2a: The Wilks scheme is unusual, as it requires skill-sets not in demand.  Dorsey won't need to target press/man corners, and will find more talented players cheaper.

3: Redundancy alert:  Genard Avery=James Harrison (except quicker and faster).

The FOUR-THREE Browns defense tertiary, contingent need is a passrushing defensive END.

I say "contingent" because I haven't given up on Ogbah yet, and want to give Chad Thomas a fair chance.

My man Randy Gurzi had a very bad day.  I have to demote him as a source.  I hope he can rally from this, but in one fell swoop he's gone from a top five guy to borderline dumbass.

Randy? Your next article is critical!  Don't make me demote you (further)!

It's hard to stay on top.  Your emotions undermine you, ya no?  You read some Randy Gurzi and love him...then you read this last mock draft, and...well you want to make excuses for him, and rationalize it, but you can't.

Dumbassitude is dumbassitude.  I'm lonely, so I want to think Gurzi is like me, but I can't let my emotions trump my objectivity.

I'll put Gurzi on probation.  That's the best I can do.

I admire Andrew Gribble, because he is so good at talking to idiots without insulting them.

Yes, I could do that job.

Gribble is actually very knowlegable, and no doubt can't believe a lot of the questions he gets in his "mailbag".

But he can't say "what tf are you talking about!?!" or "are you mentally impaired or what?"

Gribble earns every penny they pay him.

I could do that.  If paid enough.

My Never-Ending War on Browns Fan's Dumbassitude: Football 101

Some of you comment-trolls are utterly deranged.  Like the guy who told Joe Thomas to go away because "we're sick of you", and the other idiot who agreed.

This had to do with Big Joe and Shaun O'Hara saying that Greg Robinson didn't suck (read: the 2019 Browns don't need a left tackle).

These idiots resented Joe Thomas (what does he know?) expressing his opinion on this matter which contradicted what these two cretins had been mindlessly repeating for several weeks.

Really now--how can we make Bernie Kosar shut up and quit buggin us?  (Oh and that Burleson guy!)

Seriously, these guys are genuine experts on these matters, and when they expose you for the ignoramus you are, just take it like a man.

When you stamp your foot and say "you just shut up!" well...I wish you could hear yourself as others hear you...(err...I mean as others with 3-digit IQ's hear you).

But I digress: Joe and Shaun really point out the obvious, as I have been since before the season ended.

Especially Joe Thomas, who mentioned how Baker Mayfield (this particular quarterback) operates, in this specific offensive scheme.

This is a diplomatic way of saying "Greg Robinson doesn't need to be like me in this offense, and with this quarterback."

...is any of this sinking in yet?  (I can dig up lots more expert witnesses, ya no.)

One Troll stubbornly proclaims the need for a "go-to" big tall X receiver, and cited several Superbowl teams.

This guy says nobody on the Browns roster is like Baldwin, Edelman, Jones, or errumm...Brown?

Anyway what an idiot.  Julio Jones was the only true number one X on his list, and the quarterbacks were Ryan, Big Ben, Wilson, and Brady.

Players like the wide receivers Mister Ipso-Factoid listed are on the current roster, and Baker Mayfield will show them to us in 2019.

Julio Jones can make a shaky quarterback look good, but he's a rare exception to this rule:  Great quarterbacks elevate their receivers.

Ball-placement.  Timing.  Touch.  Improvisation.

Stay with me here:  Tom Brady won Superbowls before Edelman or Gronk came along, and superstar Pro Bowl receivers fell off the edge of the Earth when they left the Patriots.

Like Brady, every other Superbowl-winning quarterback in recent memory spread the ball around.

This idiot ass umes that Callaway can't possibly be like Edelman in 2019.

Baldwin--really?  Perriman, Strong, Willies, Ratley, Louis, or Higgins can't be like him oh puh-leez!!!

Nice case, Mister Factoid!  The jury was out for 15 minutes. Bu-bye!

Anyway Joe Thomas and Shaun O'Hara also defended RT Chris Hubbard who, they agreed, really became pretty solid in the second half of last season.

I have to insert here that, like Robinson, Hubbard was helped by Baker Mayfield and Freddie Kitchens (unchained).

Joe is new to this "analyst" stuff, but O'Hara is THE established go-to expert on offensive lines and offensive linemen.

His advice boils down to: "Don't mess with this unit."

This is what really happened, kids:

The Browns drafted one of the best quarterbacks anybody has ever seen in 2018.  He was every bit as good as he looked in 2018 (surrounded by all these bumbs and losers), and he'll make a huge leap coming back in 2019.

In 2018, Baker Mayfield (and Freddie Kitchens of course) might have had more to do with salvaging Brashad Perriman and Greg Robinson off the scrap-heap than anything else.

The Monken/Kitchens/Mayfield offense in 2019 will naturally be prolific, as Mayfield and the other youngsters make their leaps.

(I gotta mention this: One Troll listed Running Back among his retarded version of offseason "needs", but changed his mind when another genius pointed out that Kareem Hunt is here now...?%÷$_!???l).

Obviously, John Dorsey is looking for defensive tackles (and passrushing defensive ends), real linebackers, and (maybe) cornerbacks in that order...because he HAS A BRAIN.

...See why I won't apply for writing slots anymore (aside from the publications getting this link and letting me do their thinking for them)?

I wish somebody with more ambition than me would start a Politically-incorrect Browns website.  I guarantee you, there IS a market for it!

I did do this in the past.  I covered the AFC North for one of the Internet rags you read now.  Just can't remember which.

Anyway I had to quit when I became a trucker (wireless wasn't what it is today).

It was cool to get "published", but I had to keep my tie on and make sure not to offend anybody.

My publisher really liked me because I was objective.  You'd never know I was a Browns fan...

But I digress: If somebody with some testosterone is looking for real talent, here I am.

(Note to my Intellectual Property-Raiders:  If you PAY me enough, I can still write inoffensive vanilla crap, with some inoffensive milquetoast humor).

There's your fkng "resume"🖕

OMG Stephen Glassic Jr channeled me in listing the reasons why the Browns should take over the AFC North in 2019 (with extra sauce on the perennially-overrated Ravens being...well, overrated...again)

Wow Steve was assertive, sarcastic, and even borderline offensive!  Holy crap maybe I WILL apply for this gig!  Maybe the market is changing and there's room for a watered-down real me!

Anyway Steve was on the money, right down to...well just the stuff I just wrote about prioritizing the defense this offseason.

Ok I will apply for this gig tomorrow, and I can guarantee you:

You will read everything I write.

We'll just see if my NAME is on some of it.

This just in: Nevermind.  If I had a laptop and cloud account or could actually write my resume and...

They hired Headhunters.  Wow.  Talent is tertiary to your mother's maiden name and stuff.

I wish I had 40 years back, and maybe 22 grand.  I'd hire the ad and marketing geeks and find the writers myself.

My writers would disagree with and argue with eachother (directly) if they disagreed, and might insult eachother too.

They would be allowed to take others to task as well (except sans the insults).

MY publication would attract SMART people (including non-fans)...

But what do I know🖕?

Frank Clark, Ndomukong Suh, Analytics, Dorsey, and the Browns

I'm thrilled with the idea that 25 year old Frank Clark could become a Cleveland Brown, but worried that the Seahawks will franchise tag him.  I got my fingers crossed.

Thanks to Gurzi (I think), I now know that Father Flannagan (John Dorsey) might be able to rescue another troubled youth (dirt cheap) in 6'4" wide receiver Preston Williams.

Williams will not be at the Combine, or on many draft boards, due to an incident that happened in his freshman year.

This zero tolerance stuff is good in some ways, but sometimes it--and public reaction--gets out of hand.

Preston was 18 and in love (or at least obsessed) with a particular woman.  If you have a weak stomach, don't read this next part:

He grabbed her by the arm!  That's horrible enough, I know, but then he also texted and called her like 100 times too!

Hard to believe Preston isn't wearing a number several digits longer (on an orange jump suit).

Anyway, I remember being 18 and male.  Give. Me. A. Break.

Anyway, this guy is just phenominal--like Josh Gordon phenominal.  But worst human being on Earth or no, I doubt he makes it to round 4.

Dan Justik is starting to talk me into Ndamokong Suh...sorta.

Bill Barnwell projects a two-year (18 mil/year) fully guaranteed contract, and Dan points out that it would run out before Mayfield or Garrett would need to be re-signed.

And for sure, Suh's still "got it"; he's still probably the best at what he does (nose or zero-shade--run stopper and pocket collapser).

Still...this is one of the best defensive tackle draft classes a lot of us have ever seen!  John Dorsey is libel to draft two or even three of these guys, and you want to also take over 8% of your cap for Suh?

Dan (I'm projecting, but he's smart so I'm probably right) might axe me "Are any of these guys as good as Suh?"  and point out that the AFC North is there for the taking.

Well it's hard to answer the first question, because Suh isn't a 3-tech penetrator, while a number of these whippersnappers are.

Then there's Larry Ogunjobi, who this season prospered at Suh's position (zero shade). Larry can definitely play 3-tech if a real stud takes over the zero, but is that worth 18 mil?

Certainly, it's worth the 17th overall draft pick!

If you're going to spend 18 mil on one defensive lineman in 2019, it should be a passrushing defensive end.

Dan and Barnwell could be right about what Dorsey will do, but I wouldn't pay Suh all that with all these impressive rookie DTs available for peanuts.

Dorsey did make yet another smooth move in signing Jaelen Strong (Justik article again -sigh-).

Much like Rashad Perriman and Greg Robinson, Strong has been a "bust" to-date, which is why John Dorsey scraped him off the sidewalk for peanuts.

Dan is wrong about the Browns needing a big/tall outside wide receiver, but they always help.

Unlike Perriman, a lot of Strong's problems stemmed from injuries, but he was a great athlete at his Combine, and this is a zero risk, extremely high reward (analytical) move by John Dorsey.

The competitors at X and Z now include Higgins, Strong, Perriman, Willies, and Ratley...but of course the Browns need MORE to help Baker Mayfield in the Monken/Kitchens offense...good grief.

More corrections: One nimrod listed Defensive End and EDGE as Browns' needs.

Check out Joe Thomas's "Film Room" (partly) about James Harrison.  Genard Avery is James Harrison.

Lost in the Kareem Hunt signing is just how good Nick Chubb really is.  The "film room" guy who wrote the linked article, for all his ranting and raving, sold Nick short as a receiver.

As I told you about 12 times a couple hundred posts ago, in his freshman year at Georgia, Chubb caught a lot of passes.

While he was injured, Sony Michel emerged as a terrific receiver, and when Nick came back, his role in the offense was redefined.

With the Browns, Duke Johnson took most of the third and long reps, partly because he's an excellent receiver off the line as well as out of the backfield.

Don't confuse limited production with lack of ability.

Somebody mocked linebacker Devin White to the Browns at 17th overall, and I'd buy that for a dollar, as White is generally expected to go in the top ten, and is regarded as the best real linebacker in this draft class.

The need at linebacker is real.  Jamie Collins and his inflated contract are as good as gone.  Those who keep saying that Christian Kirksey played well need a reality check.  Schobert was good overall, but led the league in missed tackles.

Rodney Averyfield 2.0 should be pretty good, but upgrading linebacker is almost as important as upgrading DT.

Too bad John Dorsey doesn't have a crystal ball, but hmmm...

Well the mock drafts which have him drafting an offensive tackle 17th overall are pretty dumb, but those that have him grabbing yet another cornerback are not.

...Yeah...yeah he just might go after Suh.  If he has DT nailed down ahead of the draft...and he wants a young stud corner to pair with Denzel Ward (yeah Mitchell is exceptional but you need a whole bunch of these guys these days)...

Hmm...If Suh is already here (for two seasons), Dorsey has lots of options at 17th overall.  If White falls to him, he can scoop him up.  Or he can use a couple lower picks to move up and nab him (or some other non-DT).

In this draft, John Dorsey can draft quality defensive tackles into the fourth round.

The Suh stuff makes more sense now.

Well I didn't like the Hunt signing either, until I counted the money and considered the long-term possibilities...

Suh WOULD make a big difference in 2019, and he's got all that experience to pass along.

Yeah he used to be the dirtiest player in the NFL (well at least tied with James Harrison), but he's learned to curb his psychopathic tendancies (like Harrison did BTW), and is at least almost human now.

Business is business:

In 2018, John Dorsey signed and traded for FOUR defensive backs ahead of the draft, and then still drafted Denzel Ward 4th overall (and another cornerback later).

The other cornerback is gone, and so will at least one of the aforementioned free agents be.

Defensive tackle is different.  Most rosters only carry four of those guys active.  Maybe this time he just signs THE BEST available free agent DT.

If he then drafts yet a third defensive tackle 17th overall, it just means he has the best and deepest DT rotation in the NFL.

But if not, he can have a studly top two inside, and upgrade linebacker substantially as well, or create one of the best secondaries in the NFL with that pick.

Dorsey has options at DE and linebacker in free agency this year too, and the paradigm is new.  He will sign older guys (to shorter term and cheaper contracts of course), because he is aiming beyond just winning the AFC North in 2019.

Anyway, I might stand corrected.

I'll have to get back to you on that.
