Since John Dorsey seems to have made up his mind to hire just about anybody but Gregg Williams as the Browns' permanent Head Coach, I guess Dan Campbell doesn't sound too bad...I mean if you're just determined that it can't be Williams...
I like that Campbell did a College Paper on Bill Parcells (and then wound up playing for him). This guy was kind of thinking like a Coach even as a tight end.
Going 5-7 as an interim Head Coach himself with those Miami Dolphins was actually pretty good! Then the Fins kicked him to the curb and hired Gace instead, because he...well he coached Peyton Manning so...
Great move, right? Sounds familiar, somehow...
...anyway I also like that Dan got to coach under Sean Payton. Between his playing and coaching carreers, he's had some good systems and examples to learn from.
Mary Kay brings politics into it, but if Bill Parcells is pushing for him, it's smart to listen anyway...well assuming he is, as Mary Kay is assuming, anyway (facts not in evidence).
No I need to expand that just a bit: Because Campbell played for Parcells doesn't neccessarily mean that Bill is waving pompoms for him here, okay, Mary? Obviously he liked him as a player, but as a Coach?
Mary Kay does include some actual quotes which indicate that Campbell is a leader and popular, and not a disciplinarian. That's more good than bad, but dangerous, okay?
Saint Freddie aside (not being sarcastic Kitchens IS all that in my book), the main reason the idiotic penalties and drops went away the instant Gregg Williams took over was because he is a disciplinarian.
Hue Jackson was a "player's coach". All HIS players sang his praises, including Joe Thomas (be embarrassed, Joe. Be very embarrassed).
Happily, Campbell himself addressed this in a kind of self-critique in discussing what he did wrong and right in his interim HC stint with the Fins. Intellectually, he knows he needs to get "harder" in some ways.
Mary Kay supposes that Campbell would retain Freddie Kitchens, which makes sense, and would insure offensive continuity (I don't see Campbell sticking his nose in and micromanaging).
There's a good chance that Gregg Williams would leave, one way or another (previous posts/common sense). Some disruption seems certain.
*I would consider replacing Gregg Williams with his SON at Defensive Coordinator! Just a thought: I know little about him, other than his pedigree(?)*
Josh McDaniels is an interesting prospect, assuming you're going to kick Gregg Williams to the curb no matter what, just 'cuz...
He may have soaked some stuff up from Lord Insideous, but really Tom Brady mostly runs his offense, so...
But McDaniels did Head Coach the Broncos for two seasons. He did okay in his first season, then got killed and fired in his second season.
I remember Belichick himself, so I always want to give these guys coming back for a second chance an extra look.
I mean, just look at Gregg Williams...oh yeah. Nevermind. WTF?!?
