Colon Cowherd Jumps the Shark AGAIN! This Clown Has an Audience? Really?

Baker Mayfield needs to grow up, per Colon Cowherd.  Fair enough, but the Maxine Waters of sports talk never stops at "rational":

He also predicted that the Browns wouldn't make the playoffs in 2019.

Stand by: Next up will be a Freddie Kitchens mid-season firing and a "civil war" in Berea...and of course the ice caps will melt all at once too.

The Browns were a kicker away from beating the Saints, Steelers and Ravens to win the AFC North.  They were held back early by youth and bad coaching.

They enter their second season in the same offensive system, they will upgrade their special teams by default, have ten draft picks, tons of cap space, and John Dorsey.

They were one of (if not THE) youngest team(s) in the NFL in 2018, and they're keeping all their best players.

You really have to be mentally impaired to predict that this team won't even make the playoffs as a wild card in 2019.

What an ass-hat!

A close second is the click-baiter who said none of the high-profile Head Coach candidates wanted to deal with Baker Mayfield...my god these people are allowed to vote!

Ever seen the movie "Idiocracy"?  It was supposed to be a comedy, but it's starting to look as on-the-money as "1984"!!!

Mike Priefer is the new Special Teams coach.  He's not awesome or anything, but is extremely competent, and above average.  I'll TAKE it!!!

He was once suspended for three games for "homophobic remarks", and in this PC environment, that might have killed a promising carreer.

Yes, folks: One word...even whispered--can ruin your life.

He left the Vikings for the Browns.  They almost certainly offered him more money, but Preifer also had to see a team on the rise jam-packed with special teams' fodder.

They just need to get very serious about finding a reliable kicker.  Dorsey should be prepared to turn the petty cash can upside down to nail one down.

I have to tentatively eat some crow, because Mike Florio doesn't tend to make stuff up.

He says that Paul DePodesta actually was pushing for Stefanski, for some inexplicable reason, while Dorsey (and company) wanted Kitchens.

If this is true, I'm really disappointed in my man Paul.  He had to be into necromancy and astrology to push that agenda.

I do need to make a couple corrections here, however:

DePodesta doesn't have a "crew", okay?  This wasn't a "voting" thing (Nerds vs Jocks).

It was Dorsey's call, period.  Haslam handed it to him.  As the owner, Haslam had to endorse the decision, but there was never an "impasse".

Per Florio, Baker Mayfield ultimately broke the "tie" by (wowzers) backing Kitchens.

Look: DePodesta was outnumbered like 6:1.  Haslam was NEVER going to override Dorsey (and his unanimous posse).  Asking Mayfield's opinion was pro forma, and the whole thing was at least 50% a publicity stunt.

I'm not all that confident Florio got this right, either.  I have a hard time believing that Paul DePodesta would pound the table over Stefansky.

Per MKC, Arizona Head Coach Steve Wilks is close to signing on as the Browns' new Defensive Coordinator.

Generally speaking, he has the background to help support Freddie Kitchens as he makes the huge leap from position coach to Head Coach.

Regardless of his record, Wilks was a Head Coach, and prior to that an assistant Head Coach (and DC) for the Panthers in 2017.

In 2017, the Panthers defense ranked 11th overall.

I just tried searching for the Panthers 2017 defensive stats and wasted ten minutes...I'll get back to you on apparently inconsequential stuff like SCORING defense and turnovers and stuff after a night of sleep, some coffee, and 3 more hours of diligent research (nah! Somebody else will do that for me -whew!-)

Ah, Nick Snook to the rescue!  Wilks's 2017 Panthers D was 10th in points allowed (20.4 per game).

I found this article on the 2017 Panthers D:

They ran a Tampa 2.  You should click this one, because the (New England) writer really knows his stuff.

Never assume that a new DC will automaticly run "his" defense regardless of personnel, but this tells us where Wilks came from.

The Tampa 2 is mainly a zone defense.  It doesn't make sense if you have a Denzel Ward and a Mitchell at cornerback, and a Damarius Randall at free safety.

While it would be great for Jabrill Peppers and Joe Schobert, on-balance well...you just don't waste elite man-corners like that.

But Wilks himself was a defensive back, and no doubt gets this.  He will (famous last words) probably adapt his scheme to his personnel.  I hope.

Much of the Tampa 2 stuff is, indeed, great for Schobert, Peppers, and Kindred.  Also for Boddy-Calhoun and the rest of the linebackers.

The Tampa 2 was invented to exploit a certain type of linebacker, and to compensate for defensive backs who couldn't man-cover.

It remains a great "fall-back" scheme for a "press/man" team that loses a Ward or a Mitchell.

I ate massive crow over Mywayorthehighway Haley, but I have to expect a former defensive back who was a college Head Coach and coached defensive backs as much as Wilks has can adapt to the players he has.

While his Panthers seemed to run a 4-3 (kind of a "given" with Tampa 2 coverage), we should assume nothing if Wilks becomes the new Defensive Coordinator.

He might never have had two stud cover corners before (it's rare).   He might never have had a Genard Avery, either.  Or a Damarius Randall.

Well I am optimistic that Wilks can't be as obtuse as Todd Haley was.  I'm pretty sure he's not a "Tampa 2 or bust"/"no madder wudd" guy.

The Browns defense is already talented.  While there are soft spots, Dorsey has a ton of cash and ten draft picks to aim at them.

Aside from KICKER, the Browns DEfensive priorities should be DT/OLB, EDGE, and...well that's it, in that order.

I HOPE that Wilks (I believe he'll be hired) will build his defense around his talent.

For sure, he won't ask John Dorsey to get players that Gregg Williams wouldn't want.

I don't think Wilks neccessarily sucked as a Head Coach either.  He took over a pile o crap and it didn't get better.

If the Browns hire him, you guys will get the rest of the story, right here.  But off-hand I can cite a lack of team talent.

Josh Rosen may become "all that" but had no chance as a rookie.  Fitzgerald is fading, and is only one guy.  David Johnson is not the same after his injury.  Their offensive line sucked, and so did their defense...

Wilks would be a good (or great) Defensive Coordinator, but (more importantly) a great advisor and "sounding board" for Freddie Kitchens.

"Been there done that", see?

Some of you don't comprehend this, but football is a TEAM sport,  and...

I will explain further later.  It will be painful and humiliating for many of you.

...okbye.

THIS JUST IN: (Courtesy of MKC):

Mary Kay clarifies a lot of this.  Her bashers are clueless.  She's probably assumed some stuff, but a whole lot less than anybody else in this case.

BTW quit bashing MKC just 'cuz she's a girl.  You embarrass me.
