Well, they sure aren't messing around hiring new coaches, and I officially like most of them!
The Peanut Gallery seems to think that there are too many, and that most of them are from Green Bay and Arizona.
Percentage-wise, I guess Green Bay leads the pack (get it? "Pack" haha), with Arizona second, but there's nothing to complain about here.
Get off the labels and boxes and think. Yeah the Cardinals sucked. That's because Rosen sucked and their offensive line sucked and...well it wasn't coaching. Put away the broad brush.
The Pack fired McCarthy, so that means all his assistants must have sucked too? Jeez forget the broad brush--put down the spray paint!!!
Checking out all these assistant coaches individually, (here's some help on that), these are ALL well-respected, experienced, high caliber coaches.
Obviously, John Dorsey has been helping Freddie out here, as the Associate Head Coach/offensive line coach, assistant offensive line coach, and defensive passing game coordinator/secondary coach all came from Green Bay.
Defensive Coordinator is the former AZ Head Coach, and he brought a linebacker coach/defensive running game coordinator with him...the Peanut Gallery's curious math seems to think any two coaches from the same organization constitute a "flood of losers" or something.
But Wilks and Holcomb were with the Panthers before they went to a much less talented Cardinals team. What these guys accomplished in 2017 (and before) with real NFL players brought them here.
If you don't believe me, ask any front office guy or coach in the NFL. They all like every single one of these hires, and even rant a bit about Campen, Whitt, and Holcomb.
There are a bunch of exotic titles here (reminiscent of the Sashi Brown era). As I've tried to explain 20 or so times, Paul DePodesta is a top-notch business consultant to Fortune 500 companies. All this "analytics" stuff came from him, and not Sashi Brown, the lawyer.
Obviously, John Dorsey and Freddie Kitchens like this organizational structure (*which other teams are now copying*).
The "assistant" offensive/defensive line coaches etc are the de facto position coaches now. They coach technique and develop players.
The passing/running game coordinators coach the overall units, and no doubt argue with eachother about personnel.
A hundred fifty or so posts ago, I said (for the 20th or so time) that an offensive coordinator (let alone Head Coach) shouldn't care how the sausage is made, if he has capable assistant coaches.
That is to say, they don't need to dictate the schemes: Inside zone, outside zone, g-power...let the assistants make the most of what they have.
In Freddie Kitchens, I sense that we have a rare non-control freak/egomaniac, who is psychologically qualified for his brevit promotion.
All the stuff he did as Offensive Coordinator is well-documented, and of course he will keep calling plays (as he obviously should).
But he himself ran every run-blocking scheme in the book (Haley's playbook had them all btw---Kitchens just used more of them).
I could be wrong, but it seems to me that, with John Dorsey's (and Paul DePodesta's) help, Freddy Kitchens is systematically making sure his own job will be as simple and easy as possible.
Most Head
Lord Insideous didn't become a Hall of Fame Head Coach until he learned to just hire and train the best assistants he could, and let them do their jobs. And everybody wants McDaniels as a Head Coach now, right?
Well, Tom Brady runs that offense. He has for nearly a decade...but I digress:
Freddy might not be a genius like Lord Insideous, but he is already more "evolved" than Belichick 1.0 was psycholigically. Freddie was never a control-freak, or insecure, or paranoid, and always "played well with others".
I identify strongly with Freddie Kitchens. I spare you details--but I was like him as a boss, and got great results. I know this guy. I see his stamp of approval on all these hires.
Freddie won't spend 120 hours a week micromanaging everybody (like Bill 1.0 did in Cleveland). He's already Bill 2.0: "Do your job", see?
Remember this when you read about a DePodesta (oh yeah and his imaginary "crew") vs Dorsey (and maybe Kitchens) "power struggle" or "civil war" or whatever.
Here on this planet, the Cleveland Browns now have a terrific coaching staff, and a Head Coach who will call the offensive plays as well as anybody in the NFL, determine the offensive game-plans, and get out of everybody else's way.
I 💘 Freddy Kitchens. The Cleveland Browns are going to win the AFC North in 2019, because Freddy won't screw it up.
John Dorsey will help. As I mentioned in my last post, he should target AFC North free agents first to weaken opponents, or at least force them to spend more money.
He (and yes Sashi Brown) has already built the most talented team in this Division, including possibly the best 2019 quarterback. And running back. And tight end crew, and interior offensive line but I digress---
I'm impressed by this whole transition (as are the REAL experts on NFL Radio etc).
Contrary to rumor, the Freddie Kitchens' promotion was NOT "unpopular" among the real experts, for the reasons I outlined:
Gregg Williams is 60. Kitchens would be somebody else's Head Coach in 2020, if not 2019. Gregg's defense wasn't actually that good.
Of course, the guys on NFL Radio "oohed" and "ahhed" over McDaniel and Gace, so I can't even trust them:
Gace taught Peyton Manning everything he already knew, and McDaniel got out of Brady's way.
Speaking of "getting out of the way", everybody who says anything about "developing" Baker Mayfield is clueless (unless it's about shrinks trying to make him stop being a PUNK).
Mayfield is already ranked 9th in the NFL by PFF. He was stifled under Todd Haley, but even succeeded under him; Mayfield proved he could function in even the worst scheme for his skill-set!
If Mywayorthehighway Haley had been jettisoned earlier (in favor of Freddie Kitchens), Mayfield might have ranked 7th or higher, and won another game.
Developing Baker Mayfield was never a consideration in any of these coaching hires.
Monken (Offensive Coordinator) was certainly tailored to what Mayfield does best (you know spread offense?), but..."development"? Stop it.
You people are so clueless. Boxes and labels:
Baker Mayfield was a rookie, like Darnold etc, so his 46 starts in college and two top four contests don't matter?
Now, what he did in the NFL doesn't matter either? He needs to be "mentored" or developed, just like everybody else?
Think with your BRAIN: Baker Mayfield was a top ten NFL quarterback despite Todd Haley. If you separate the Haley stats from the Kitchens' stats, Mayfield was as good as it gets.
"Develop" Baker Mayfield!?! WTF are you talking about?
JEEZ Freddie Kitchens just took his collar off and got tf out of his way! If Todd Hale...
Nevermind: The 2019 Browns should sweep/win the AFC North in 2019.
I HAVE SPOKEN.
