Odell Beckham Jr and the Browns and Rumors and Analytics and Stuff

Randy Gurzi is getting better at intelligent analysis as he attacks a rumor that OBJ wants out:

He seems to understand, this time, that the rumor is likely based in conjecture from somebody like me, and nothing he or his teammates or coaches or family or agent or anybody else actually said.

That's progress.  Randy is getting there.

Anyway, OBJ might well want out as, for whatever reasons, his production remains at historic lows for him.

Beckham has been a great team player.  As I said when ignorant people were comparing him to Antonio Brown, while he does love attention, he's not selfish or stupid, and I'd prefer to keep him, but...

Full disclosure: I was less than thrilled with the trade that brought OBJ here.  You can check my posts from then and earlier.

In a nutshell, I said that Baker Mayfield naturally distributed the ball to the deepest open receiver.

Mayfield made stars out of nobodies--several of which have been released and disappeared.  I didn't consider a superstar wide receiver a priority at all, whatsoever, for this Quarterback.

I now believe that, (exactly as I predicted before and after the trade),  compelling Mayfield to favor one receiver and throw deep more often has done more harm than good.

NOW, opposing defenses focus on OBJ in various ways, but always taking the whole top (deep) part of his route tree away.

I can't get too deep in the weeds here, but because OBJ isn't big or tall, one-handed catches or no, he's NOT a good target on vertical deep routes.

The loss of David Njoku hurt OBJ, as Njoku IS a vertical deep threat inside that physically overmatches any one defender in coverage.  Njoku makes a big difference!

But the addition of Kareem Hunt should also have taken some heat off OBJ in several ways (but in a nutshell it's mainly that the Free Safety has to be more aggressive in general, and can NOT ever ignore Hunt...)

It's more deep weeds, but ok ok that Free Safety is the break glass-in-case-of-emergency guy; the "cap"; the shoestring td-preventer, ok?

Kareem Hunt as a receiver overmatches any defender they try to cover him with (*the corners are on Landry and OBJ, the SS (or somebody) on Njoku, ergo some linebacker or oversized safety has to try to cover Hunt, and that's just...funny, ok?)

Anyway all-man is idiot-proof for Baker Mayfield---dammit, and...

Too deep.  Honest guys, I could break it all down, but you'd get bored and bug (or pass) out.

Anyway I digress: As I (blush-blush) predicted in a post a long time ago, Odell Beckham Jr could be on the trading block after 2019.

His age, history, and contract trump 2019, and he should fetch a first round pick at least.

No knock on OBJ the player or person, but I'll take that deal, and use the savings to keep Schobert and company.

Just a note here on TE Stephen Carleson:  He's like DeValve (an oversized WR), but is 6'4", has blocked well, and seems to have already passed up Ricky Seals-Jones.  Very promising.

Ron Rivera a Good Idea for Browns, sorta (For Sentient People Only)

I can't find anything wrong with Randy Gurzi's notion that it might be a good idea for the Browns to bring in Ron Rivera.

*Full disclosure: English is my first language, and I was trained to think with my brain*

Randy shouldn't have to explain to you people that he is talking about hiring Rivera as a consultant for the remainder of 2019--not as a Coach in 2020.

Obviously, Ron Rivera will be somebody's HEAD Coach in 2020 duh.

What Randy is talking about is a way for Rivera to stay busy and make significant extra cash (without voiding his remaining pay from the Panthers) while helping out...

Well Randy is talking about Rivera's protege, Steve Wilks, but really Rivera is a very good HEAD Coach, and could most certainly help Freddie Kitchens out as well.

In separate articles, the Browns are named one of the top landing spots for Rivera in 2020 (most have Freddie on the skids already).

Pragmaticly speaking, contracting Rivera as a consultant now would establish a strong relationship with the Front Office and familiarity with the players...just in case.

I still believe that Freddie Kitchens is growing into a very good Head Coach, and his offensive creativity is important to this team.

This would be a "can't lose"/"hedge your bets"/insurance move by Jimmy Haslam, who could pay Rivera a LOT (no salary cap here, see?)

1: Rivera has a stellar record as a Defensive Coordinator, and "trained" Steve Wilks.

2: He won a Superbowl as a Head Coach, and will obviously probably be THE hottest Head Coach prospect in the NFL due to his record and reputation.

3: Rivera could help ALL the Coaches a lot as a consultant, and (trust me) would be welcomed by both Kitchens and Wilks.

Rivera could advise Kitchens on organizational structure and a lot of other non-"x/o" stuff, and offer stability.  His influence would be long-term.

4: Dorsey and the Haslams get to know Rivera and vice-versa (well Rivera gets to know the players, too).

Plan B: Replace Freddie with Ron.

Plan B1: Replace Freddie with Ron and retain Freddie as Offensive Coordinator.

Continuity is important, you people, and that's why even if you think Ron Rivera is better than future Freddie, you...

John Dorsey has spent most of the cap space he inherited from Paul DePodesta Sashi Brown, and has too much young talent to retain.

The Steelers and Bengals have talent issues, but the Ravens are scary, long-term.

Can the Browns hold onto Kareem Hunt?

Don't be an idiot: EVERYBODY will be offering ungodly money for him!  John Dorsey will NOT be able to afford Hunt AND Schobert, Randall, Higgins, (kiss Kirksey good bye)...

I want to overpay Kareem Hunt long-term (assuming Freddie Kitchens is also retained).

Screw the "Running Back" label on Hunt: Replace that with "weapon".  But he will cost a fortune, ok?

However, if Freddie Kitchens sticks around, Hunt would be worth that, because he can line up anywhere, is a great blocker, can REPLACE an injured Chubb, and is neck-and-neck with OBJ and Chubb as the scariest skill-player on this offense.

Voice of sanity Doug Lesmerisis channeled my humble self in an excellent opinion piece on the spastic, reactive, tantrum-like reactions of many Browns fans to the Browns loss in Pittsburgh.

Freddie's t-shirt is "T-shirtgate"--what a joke!  So some Steelers players said it ticked them off---big freakin deal they know that Rudolph did start it, as does any objective observer!  Who the hell told you that NFL players are mentally impaired!?! That's what we call a "steryotype".

If the T-shirt had said "Rudolph Had it Coming", or "Free Garrett", I'd be with the snowflakes on this, but most of your reactions are a joke to us old-timers.

Put on your big boy pants, sissies!

But Doug's main point was that the solution to this problem is not to fire Freddie Kitchens...ie not to fire yet another Head Coach after one season (and start over again).

Fortunately, Jimmy Haslam is loathe to do that as, despite giving the 1-31 Hue Jackson a third year (at least at first), he still has a rep as a "meddling", impatient spazz (knock-knock: anybody home!?!)

Doug must read this Blog, as he joins me in pointing out that this "lack of discipline" narrative in re Kitchens' Browns is utter bullshit based on the first few games of his tenure with one of the youngest rosters in the NFL.

Whitehead was cut loose for social media comments, Callaway for being late and a poor work ethic, and STAR safety Damarius Randall scratched and left home for undisclosed reasons (amazing nobody has leaked that yet by the way: Freddie/John must have promised to fire blabbermouths).

...oh and for the last 4-5 games, the Browns have been one of the least penalized teams in the NFL.

Doug didn't get too deep into what should be done to fix the Browns, but he's right that the right side of the Offensive line needs an upgrade.

I can get deeper:

1: Baker Mayfield and the offense have been damn near unstoppable when running the hurry-up at not obvious times in a game, and Freddie never does it anymore.

The hurry-up locks a defensive personnel group onto the field and prevents substitutions.  It also stifles the ability of a defense to adjust to the offense; it forces it to play more "vanilla", and puts it on it's heels.

It wears these defenders down.

When you run hurry-up only when coming from behind with time expiring, the defense can anticipate sideline passes, and not worry about inside runs or passes, but when you hurry up at any other time, the offense can use it's whole arsenal.

Vs the Steelers was the perfect time to use the hurry-up.  That's an exceptional defense, and a mediocre offense.  You don't worry about keeping that offense off the field, especially in the come-from-behind situation that the Mayfield in-game hurry-up is likely to produce D U H.

2: I'm tired of this "rolling right" Mayfield crap.  ALL right-handed Quarterbacks prefer to roll right, which is why called rollouts for them are all to their right.

It's the "called" part that's missing here:

When you have a mobile quarterback who can throw on the move, rollouts are a great way to H I N T.  H I N T help a shaky pass-blocking offensive line.

It tanks the edge rush from the left side by forcing that speedster to either try to go through the left tackle or circumnavigate the globe to run around him.  It lets the Right tackle attack instead of defend. And (to repeat) it forces all passrushers to react and alter their trajectories after their first steps.

As long as you don't do this too often, called rollouts consistently buy your quarterback at LEAST an extra half second, and often a lot more time to scan the field.

I can't fathom why this is so rarely used by the Browns offense, especially vs this most recent opponent, which can really blow up a pocket.

3: Uncharacteristically, Freddie all but abandoned the run in the second half vs the Steelers.

With all due respect to Lesmerisis, Teller and Hubbard weren't important here, as Chubb and Hunt were both doing damage, and the Steelers defense had to be wearing down.

Just in general, you don't attack the 2019 Steelers defense by air if you can avoid it.  There was no reason to get pass-happy at any point during the first 3.5 quarters of this game.  This was absotively Freddie's call, and likely the biggest single reason the Browns lost.  Yeah you, Freddie!

But I concur with Doug: Freddie Kitchens is learning on the job (like Bill Belichick was awhile back), and has showed some promise.

Now, a few corrections here: There are only so many ways to get the ball to OBJ, and the Browns have tried all of them, sometimes to the detriment of the offense in general.

And let's not go to lala land with this "next man up/no excuses" crap:  In the real world, Damarius Randall and Chad Thomas mattered (not to mention Myles Garrett).

Greedy Williams is a rookie, and errumm...who the hell stepped in for Thomas after he got hurt?  Probably a guy who wasn't on the team 2 weeks ago, and who none of us ever heard of.

Freddie Kitchens' Browns beat the Bills and dominated the Ravens and Steelers; and hung with the Patriots too.

Freddie Kitchens has earned his second year already (assuming the team doesn't collapse and finish less than 8-8).

Just as nobody with a brain labels a player a "bust" off his rookie season, they can't do that to a Head Coach (who wasn't even a coordinator for over half a season prior to his elevation to Head Coach)

As good as the Ravens are, even I can't predict that the Browns will beat them again, but the Browns should beat everybody else on their schedule.

If they don't, then I will consider thinking about possibly considering the idea of concievably firing Freddie and starting over AGAIN, but I'll probably stand with Freddie anyway (especially if the alternative is Mike McCarthy).

Stick those ropes, torches, and pitchforks where the sun don't shine in re Freddie Kitchens, and get up off him (a T-Shirt...really?)

1: Baker Mayfield is in his second NFL season.

2: The Browns have 2 mediocre Offensive Tackles (sans Robinson vs Pittsburgh btw) and a WORSE Right Guard.

3: Njoku has been mia, DISCIPLINE has deleted a BUNCH of key players: Whitehead and Callaway cut, Morgan Burnett on IR, Randall benched, Garrett suspended, Thomas injured too and you parrots squawk this "next man up" garbage ask the Patriots about that gdammit you cretins (no offense).

The Bengals just stomped the Jets.  The Dolphins beat the Eagles.  The Titans stomped the Colts, the Jagwires got stomped by the Bucs, and the Texans whupped the Patriots.

Get a grip, you people.  As I've illucidated, Freddie Kitchens has apparently not read my Blog, but despite that has done over 60% of the stuff I have recommended.  Obviously this makes him at least a borderline genius, and hopefully somebody will turn him onto this Blog.

Sadly, my communications with the organization remain all screwed up ("undeliverable" etc), so Freddie hasn't done the blatently obvious stuff which I (and a bunch of ex-players and coaches) have recommended.

Ok but in 2018 he used a variation of the Wishbone (3 running backs) and 3 tight ends and everything in between to max out what he had to work with, and (lately) in 2019, he (in my opinion) has overrode OC Todd Monken to max out Hunt...

If any of you had a clue, you would see that Todd Monken was running the offense until the bye, and Freddie took over after.

This might be unfair to Monken, of course, as I can't read minds, and have only how he managed his Tampa Bay players to work with, ok?

But FREDDIE I KNOW, ok?  And the pony offense and stuff I think is more him than Monken.

...and the notion that Freddie is mentally impaired is grossly ignorant.

The penalties and discipline stuff is bullshit (obviously).

"Do Your Job": Freddie Channeling Lord Insideous Music to My Eyes

We'll eventually find out why Damarius Randall was benched by Freddie Kitchens, but this is a strong Coach laying down the law.

You already know that somehow, some people will manage to whip out that big impressive "dysfunctional" word and say that this demonstrates a lack of discipline, when it's just the opposite.

This is a Lord Insideous (Belichick) move.   Do you think the Patriots are undisciplined?  I mean they're disciplined because he disciplines them, see?  And guys like Whitehead are jettisoned when they get out of hand---get it?

Speaking of the Sith Lord, this "do your job" mantra that Freddie and all his players are repeating is kinda like Bill's mantra, and I am thrilled to be hearing it from this Coach and these players.

Freddie talks about "tunnel vision" and focus, and this is all in Belichick's unpublished "How to Win" manual too.

This is more than an abstract philosophy.  A big chunk of the middle third of the Patriots' roster is always replete with "niche"-players or specialists that other teams couldn't find a use for.

Julian Edelman started out as one of these.

Bill gets these undrafted rookies and castoffs from other teams, and asks them to do fill one small, narrow role.

Situational edge-rusher, or inside run-stuffer or space-eater, blocking TE, pass-catching RB, sneaky little slot receiver, or whatever.

As Pat Kirwan told us, this is the biggest part of this "do your job" thing.

That's what these guys do in their first year with the Patriots (usually in addition to Special Teams, of course).  They might only show up on offense or defense 1-6 times in a given game, but they do show up, and often make an impact.

In year 2, the Patriots expand these players' roles (ie develop them), but the main thing is, they zero in on just one thing initially, and then build around that.

"Do your job", see?  But beyond that, this also means don't "freelance".

Talent aside, the biggest single reason that the Ravens' offense has been so unstoppable is that defenders who are supposed to stay in coverage try to nail Lamar Jackson instead (one of many examples).

That's oversimplifying, as the Ravens deliberately put these poor safeties and linebackers between rocks and hard places, and any Defensive Coordinator who thinks he can micromanage these decisions is an idiot; the 2019 Ravens offense is unprecedented...

However, do you think that the Ravens will dominate the Patriots the next time they play eachother?  You don't think Lord Insideous's defense won't find ways to slow that juggernaut down?  

And why does everybody think that what the Browns did to the Ravens was a fluke, and can't happen again?

That wasn't a digression: Vs the Ravens in game 1, Steve Wilks' defense was extremely disciplined.

Lamar Jackson was contained in the pocket, and pressured inside.  He (and Ingram etc) didn't get gaps to run through inside, because guys weren't overpursuing (getting suckered out of position) and were sticking to their gaps.

Ok now I'm digressing, since the Ravens run G-power a lot and just blast defenders out of the way (don't forget those extra tight ends), but the Browns stood up to that in game one, too, see?

These guys aint sissies, ok?  

Anyway, if Freddie Kitchens wants to copy Lord Insideous, I'm ok with that.

And quit insulting Freddie.  How he maxed out the offense in 2018 was brilliant, and how he's used Kareem Hunt is---well it's exactly what I recommended, so Freddie is obviously either a genius or reads this Blog!

Back to the Randall thing:

The Steelers (partly due to Randall) are running low on wide receivers, and Steve Wilks can man up on the outside receivers with Ward and Williams.

Hodges has not proven a deep passer, and the Steelers don't show a consistent deep threat.

Wilks can keep 7-8 in the box and send a 5th rusher when needed (and field a Wade Phillips style 3-4 as required).

More Browns than Steelers fans expect Mike Tomlin to outsmart Wile E Coyote Freddie Kitchens, and the Steelers to just sorta tighten their chinstraps a little extra and show this more talented upstart team who's boss or something...

I mean it's the BROWNS, right?

Grow.  A.  BRAIN.

And (yawn) Freddie wore a "Pittsburgh Started it" T-shirt.  So I guess the Browns shouldn't bother showing up, or something?

Some Steelers Analysts are Fans. The Steelers are Outgunned. 2019 is 2019.

From Stooler writer Jeff Hardman comes a good, mostly objective and insightful article on what his Steelers need to beat the Browns this sunday.

He's technically 100% correct: The Steelers' offense needs to "wake up" and establish an early lead to make the Browns give up trying to run the ball, and of course the Steelers' defense has to stop that run early.

Jeff knows his X's and O's, and understands how the "Hunt" Browns' offense works.  He's a smart guy, which is the only reason I included this link...

However, Jeff is overlooking a few things:

1: The Hodges-led Steelers' offense can "wake up" any time it wants, but it will still see the 2019 game 13 Cleveland Browns' defense when it opens it's eyes, and that matters.

2: Jeff seems to think that something like a 10 point lead (or something) at the end of the first quarter would force the Browns to bench Hunt (or something) and quit handing off to Chubb...or something.

A TWENTY point lead wouldn't do that.  

Like a lot of writers, Jeff doesn't realize that Freddie Kitchens is different than Hue Jackson and Mywayorthehighway Haley or their predecessors, or (apparently) that the 2019 Browns defense is pretty good, so...

3: Lamar Jackson's Ravens offense is (rightfully) all the rage right now.  The biggest reason for that is that defenses can study all the films they want, and still not anticipate what they will do after any given snap.

...but the Browns' offense is only slightly more conventional or predictable in 2019, and remains more talented at the skill positions.

The Ravens have Jackson himself plus 3 dual-threat TE's, but the Browns have Hunt, Chubb, Landry, OBJ and (I expect) Njoku all on the field at the same time.

Njoku's return will make it harder for opposing defenses: Prior to his broken wrist, Njoku had become an above average in-line blocker per PFF, and also more reliable as a receiver.

Njoku can line up inside or wide.  Hunt can come out of a huddle and line up anywhere.  Chubb is being underrated due to Hunt and his role so far, but he can line up anywhere as well (including at WR).

Mayfield isn't a dual threat like Lamar Jackson is, but he has superior weapons, and a superior arm (*"arm" includes touch and accuracy.  Not bashing Jackson here, but Mayfield still has the edge as a passer).

Summing it up, the Steelers defense won't "solve" the Browns' offense any time soon.  

...I could go deeper here, but you don't want me to.

4: Baker Mayfield thrives on adversity.  All this Steeler "outrage" and "revenge" crap only makes him better (especially since it's mostly bullshit in the first place).

5: The Browns are the more talented team:

5a: There is ignorance on both sides: Steelers fans who blame Mike Tomlin for the lack of Superbowl appearances (let alone their 2019 decline) are ignorant misguided.

I dislike the guy myself, but his record speaks for itself: He's a top-shelf Head Coach...down to his third string QB and missing Antonio Brown...in the same Division as the Ravens and Browns so...(GOD it hurts to say this stuff I hate Tomlin; the Steelers Head ENABLER who defends cheap shots by his players "nothing to see here" a scumbag...nevermind)...

But Freddie Kitchens' Browns after the bye-week are 3-1 including 2-1 vs contenders, tied for 2nd as the LEAST penalized team in the NFL, with an elite QB, RB, (but I digress):

And the playcalling has worked *armchair analysts generally say "That's what I wooda done"* and in the last 4 games since the bye week the Cleveland Browns have kicked ass.

The Bills just stomped a mudhole in the Cowboys (just sayin)...

Get up off Freddie Kitchens!

...at least til sunday...and don't blame him if he can't beat the zebras.

Pittsburgh Steelers: Pucker up: Your Terrible Towels can't Fix this (although the referees COULD dammit)

1: Devlin Hodges is a very good Quarterback, as in better than Mason Rudolph (see earlier posts).  Long-term, Rudolph could come out on top, but right now, Hodges is better.  

2: The Steelers Oline will be Maukice Pounceyless. His replacement, BJ Finney, was undrafted, but is a 4 year veteran, so he might not suck...but then, he is NOT like Pouncey, who is a stud.  That's gotta sting a little!

3: Larry Ogunjobi will be back, and will definitely be picking on Finney a lot.

4: Olivier Vernon, who didn't play in the first Steelers game, should also be back for the rematch.

5: DT Sheldon Richardson excelled at DE vs the Dolphins (this is not new for him), and Steve Wilks might start moving him around now.

I didn't pay enough attention, and haven't studied films like the guys I cite here do, but suspect that Steve Wilks read my post-Garrett suspension post and ran some 3-man fronts with Takitaki as a 4th passrusher in a defacto 3-4, ala Genard Avery.

Steve Wilks might have ways to compensate for the loss of Myles Garrett.  You guys should encourage him to keep reading this Blog, since the communications glitch between me and the organization remains unresolved for some reason, but I digress:

6: Juju Smith-Schuster and Greg Robinson are in the concussion protocol, and have great chances of missing this game.

This messes up both teams, but it's hard to determine who gets hurt worse:

Greg Robinson has actually been playing better, but then the Coaching staff obviously reads this Blog, as they have schemed to mask Robinson and Hubbard's weaknesses.

The Steelers have good depth at WR, and "third string" Hodges will have had reps with the backups.

I guess I have to give the Steelers a slight edge in the concussion race.

7: While the Browns' offense is only now getting it together (with Kareem Hunt online and Njoku due back tee-tee),  the Browns' defense is ahead of them.

8: The Steelers' offense is, conversely, in decline.  The Bengals' defense stifled them last week, and the Browns...well I'm still pist that the Steelers scored ANY points...

9: Baker Mayfield revels in hostility.  He is at his best with his back against the wall, behind enema lines.

10: Except for that exceptional offensive line, the Browns outgun the Steelers talent-wise (oh good grief DUH I mean generally!  Fitzpatrick is better than Randall and...

Give Jackson, Harbaugh, and the Ravens their Props. But not the Steelers. Pucker up, Mikey!

Everybody is all agog over the 2019 Baltimore Ravens.  Well...so am I.

Don't get me wrong: Their Defense is less than perfect, and has benefitted from positiive "game scripts" (opposing teams trying to come from behind).

The Browns defense also managed to short-circuit this offense last time, and have some players to match up with those tight ends etc.

But damn--Lamar Jackson and the 2019 Ravens' offense look all but unstoppable.

Jackson is really the key here, as he has made an ass of me and several real experts with his refined touch and accuracy in year 2; Lamar Jackson is a real quarterback, and he's barely shucked his NFL training wheels.

Some of my fellow Browns fans can't (or won't) handle the truth, but the truth is that I was wrong, and these Ravens are right there with the Patriots as AFC Superbowl favorites...and I don't think even Lord Insideous can overcome Harbaugh with that arsenal.

I do still think that the Browns can beat the Ravens again, now that Kareem Hunt is an integral part of the Browns' own unusual curveball offense, and Njoku will be back shortly, and Mayfield is...himself again...

But the Ravens will win the AFC North anyway.  Dammit.

But (oh yeah I forgot) this is STEELERS week again👍!

The bad news is that Mason Rudolph will not start for the Steelers, because Hodges is a better quarterback.

The good news is abundant:

The Steelers defense includes Devin Bush, Mark Barron, and Fitzpatrick, so on paper it looks like they have the answer to the Chubb/Hunt "backfield", except...it didn't work in game one.

Njoku is set to return for the rematch, and (to my surprise) prior to his injury, Njoku was (per PFF) the best blocker of all the Browns' Tight Ends (run/pass)!

The Browns base offense is now unmistakably "21 personel" or 2 backs and one tight end.

As you know, I was high on Ricky Seales-Jones filling Njoku's role, but he's kind of fizzled as a weapon (while actually becoming a good BLOCKER go figure---he's not done yet by any means but I digress):

Njoku is an elite weapon, and Baker Mayfield has him zeroed in.

Quick review: 21 sets with two BIG backs and a REAL tight end represent a very physical run-threat and command 3-4 or 4-3 "base" defenses.

That's 4 actual defensive backs, including a strong safety.  The Steelers have Mark Barron, who is really a safety/linebacker hybrid, and they'll use him here...but there is only one of him.

My regulars get this:  When the Browns' huddle breaks,  Hunt and Chubb often line up in a "T" flanking Mayfield in a pistol.

From here, they can pick up blitzers, go out for passes, or take handoffs.  So...do you blitze?

Handoff-wise, they threaten everywhere.  

OR, when the huddle breaks, you might get Chubb in an "i" behind Mayfield, and a defacto 4-wide with Chubb and Njoku 2 of those "wide receivers", see?

How do you cover these four guys?  Do you man up on them with your two corners and one safety and...?

Do you keep a safety in center field...with CHUBB?  Do you blitze (leaving 5 in coverage...with Chubb back there?)

Seriously who mans up on Hunt, Landry, OBJ, and Njoku?  At least they don't have to worry about Chubb catching passes...oops!!!
